Hi

What time frame are you talking about?

To save duplication of what you have are you after census / bmd  also some first names and dates of birth would help.  :)

Hi, I've got James Legg b. 1830 Lechlade, possible married to Martha? Their son William b. 5/2/1854 (birth cert.) Kempsford married Mary ? of Marston, Wiltshire (unknown date). One son Thomas William, b. Jun 1885 Birmingham, d. Dec 1885 as did Mary (22/10/1885 from her death cert.). William married again to Elizabeth Paish b. Mar 1862 Fairford on 26/05/1886 (Marriage Cert.) in Birmingham. Eleven children of which the third, Frank (Francis) b. Dec 1889 was my wife's grandfather. Frank married Elsie Cull b. Mar 1891 in Birmingham in Jun 1914. Elizabeth Paish was daughter of James & Elizabeth from the South Cerney area.
I'd like to track down James' first wife and her family, plus take any of the families further back.

I'm confused! Do you mean that William b 1854 was not the son of James' first marriage? You surely have his mother's first and maiden names on the birth certificate, which should help in the search for James' marriage.

scuda-j: the birth cert of William is unclear but certainly James' wife is Martha with the possible surname of Horton. I am unable to find any marriage of Legg(e) and Horton prior to (or after) the birth at Kempsford in 1854. Earlier investigations had suggested that James wife was Mary Ann ? from Brize Norton but William's birth cert stopped that unless Martha dies and James remarried.

Maybe it would be worth posting a section of the birth certificate on here, so we can try to work out what it says. You need the part with the mother's name (obviously!) and enough extra to allow us to get a feel for the handwriting.  Was William the first child that you know of?

Going back to a James Legge marrying Mary Ann, that looks like James Leg & Mary Ann Morse, Witney, Q1 1851. I wonder if what you take as Horton on the certificate could actually be Morse?

Hi, I've cropped the birth cert of William - I think the name is Horton or Norton. If Horton the "H" does not match the Registrar's next entry of Husbandman. Anyone any ideas?

I think it must be Norton - I agree that it's nothing like the H in Husbandman. I can't see the marriage at the moment, so I'll try another tack - have you found James in 1851?
