Lawrence, Stander William b 1892 Leeds
« on: Friday 28 January 11 04:22 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for further info on the parents of Stander William Lawrence born 9 Oct 1892, South East Leeds, County of Leeds.

I sent away and rec'd the Birth Record from the UK Register office hoping to find further specifics of his parents (with a surname like Lawrence there seemed to be no other solution)

Birth Register info:  Fathers name: John William Lawrence occ: (master) bricklayer
Mother's name: Elizabeth Lawrence formerly Dampster
Address at Birth: 39 Fleece (Heece?) Lane

Have tried looking for John/John William/William Lawrence and Elizabeth Lawrence and Elizabeth Dampster/Dempster (attempting to find the marriage info) but so far there are too many solutions.... :-\  Just looking for some census or other document that might narrow things down - year of birth/place of birth, etc...for either parent

Any assistance or even guidance in other options/locations to search, would be greatly appreciated....

BCSandra,   I think I may have found your family.  Have a look and see what you think??  The family are emigrating to Canada

Departure Date: March 31, 1904
Port Departure: Liverpool
Destination: Halifax, Canada
Ship: ‘Pretoria’
Steamship Line: Allen Line
Master: J M Johnston

John W Lawrence / age 44 (or 46) / Labourer
Eliz  Lawrence / 35
Standard W Lawrence / 11
Daisy Lawrence / 9
Sydney G Lawrence/ 7
Jno F Lawrence / 4
Chas H Lawrence / 1
Fredk Lawrence / infant

I think this could be the family 1901 Census – it’s a bit of a stretch, but I am hoping its them.

1901 Census
RG13 / 1232 / 47 / 24
Cat Hill, East Barnet, Hertfordhire

John W Lawrence / head / 45 / Brick Layer / b. Ely, Cambridgeshire
Mary / wife / 33 / b. Ely, Cambridgeshire
William / son / 8 / b. Leeds, Yks
Daisy / dau / 5 / b. Wood Green, Middlesea
Sydney / son / 4 / b. Hornsey, Middlesex
Frank / son / 2 / b. wood Green, Middlesex

William – could this be Standard William?
Frank – could this be John Frank?

The name of his wife is a bit iffy!!!  Is Mary actually Elizabeth or are they 2 different women??  I am looking for a marriage, but I am beginning to wonder if they married here in the UK.  Have you had a look in your Canadian records for a marriage??

Sandra, it looks like James Boyce has married a 2nd time. Perhaps Elizabeth is not his child.   Here are details:

Marriage
James Boyce / Frances Dampster or Dampter
Dec 1869 / Ely
Vol No: 3b / Page No: 1288

I'm trying to find a birth for Elizabeth with either Dampster or Boyce, but nothing is showing at the moment.

Hello Sandra, this will be my last posting for a while so you can catch up on the current postings.  James Boyce 1st wife Caroline died 1867, Ely, Cambridgeshire.

I cannot find a birth registration for Elizabeth Dempster.  I will have a further look - it's possible that she was illegitimite and could be under the father's name??

I have found her mother Frances Demster -

1851 Census
HO107 / 1764 / 213 / 23
High Street, Sutton, Cambridgeshire

Frances DEMSTER / 13 / Scholar / b. Sutton
Parents William (b.1800) & Sarah (b. 1800)

1861 Census
RG09 / 1038 / 33  / 24
Painters Lane, Sutton

Fanny Dampster / dau / 23 / b. Sutton
She is living with her Widow mother Sarah and 2 siblings.

1841 Census
HO107   Piece: 83   Book/Folio: 10   Page: 15
High Street, sutton, Cambridgeshire

The family are listed as DAUSTER

1881 Census
RG11 / 1683 / 48 / 1
Road Street Cottage, Mepal

Elizebeth Dempster / daughter law / 14 / Ag. Lab / b. Ely
Living with James & Frances Boyce

There is a christening on 14/07/1867 at Mepal, Cambridgeshire for a Mary Elizabeth Dempster - mother Fanny Dempster. GF

Thank you for that Glen Field.  That is the birth I was looking for.  Not sure how I missed it.  anyway BCSandra should be pleased with that result.  It confirms that that Elizebeth was illegitimate.  It also confirms that on the Census she is listed as Mary, but on the Emigration papers she is Elizabeth.  This has been a long search.

Note to Sandra:

On An...try there are 2 family trees.  One is for James & Frances Boyce, James Caroline Boyce and one for William & Sarah Dempster

Sandra, have a look at this 1891 Census.  Do you think this is your Elizabeth Dempster.  Both her parents James Boyce & her mother Frances Boyce are dead.  Is it possible she is using the Boyce surname?  I don't get the Widow bit.  Back to check out the children and for a marriage.

1891 Census
RG12 / 1298 / 59 / 20
Babylon, Holy Trinity, Ely

William Dampter / Head / Widower / 34 / Farm Labourer / b. Sutton, Cambridgeshire
Mary E Boyce / Servant / Widow / 24 / Housekeeper / b. Ely
Ethel C Dampter / dau / 6 / Scholer / b. Ely
James W  Dampter / son / 4 mths / b. Ely
