Hi in the 1881 Census their is a John Lees Richards aged 10 in the Redruth Union Workhouse, shown as Pupil, along with many other residents is an Emily Richards aged 33 with 2 daughters Elizabeth Ann 13 and Eliza Jane 7, Emily is with Elizabeth on the 1871 shown as unmarried, if this is your John the task would seem to be finding where the Turner part of his name came from?

The Cornwall OPC site has appointed a new OPC for Redruth in the last few weeks and she has been sent lots of records for the town. Why dont you go to the site and contact her - Julie Wheeler.

Hi

I googled John's name and found this:

He was born on 31/12/1869. So He would have been registered in 1st quarter 1870.

I wonder if this could be him:
Male Richards
Mar q 1870
Redruth
Vol 5c pg 248

Who was he adopted by?

Where did you find that he was born 31/12/1869.

If he was then why wasnt he on the census with Emily and Elizabeth Ann in 1871 ?

Fizzy

I googled his name and found a message board on ancestry by rcg1983 ..
quote:
I am looking for any information on john turner lee richards. He is my great great grandfather.

He brought up my grandma as both her parents died when she was 2. The story behind why they were willing to look after her was because his parents had died when he was young and his parents friends brought him up.

He was born on 31/12/1869, but cannot find a birth certificate and only turns up in records once married and all cenus after.

I wonder how they know his exact date of birth if there is no birth certificate ?

Perhaps he didnt belong to Emily and girls in the workhouse after all.
