Mitchell
« on: Thursday 27 January 11 14:42 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace William Henry Mitchell of Glasgow a merchant. I know he was connected to Mitchell and Berry co--sorry don't have an address---it may not even be in Scotland. But in 1889 he was trustee for his bother in laws estate (George Hurst) in fermanagh--alas we have no address for him. In 1894/5 his address is 21 bread Street London --but he is not on the 1901 census. We next find him in 1909 when a parcel with a compliments slip --but with no address is sent to distant relatives in Fermanagh ,Ireland.

Any ides on how to trace him or the company would be appreciated.

Hi Catheyt

If he was brother in law to George Hurst, have you managed to trace George Hurst's wife's family. Might help with any searches for William Henry Mitchell if you know his aprrox. birth year and place  :)

No. We know when my great grandmother  Margaret Mitchell married George Hurst in Fermanagh and the name of her father from  the marriage cert. Also know her age from census and death cert but knothing of her family.The church they married in has no records available before 1860--so  a blank there. And while we know the land her father farmed it was only for  a few years. A search  gave no leads.Mitchell was quite popular as a surname in ireland at the time. A search on emerald ancestors did not come up with a birth record for any  Margaret Mitchell  b around 1854 .So it all suggegts the family came from another Townland--either near Fermanagh(the most likely) or from else were. Georges will talks only of W H  Mitchell of Glasgow. The address  we turned up latter on other documents.Have a feeling we will never know but always worth asking.

Lanarkshire board has some useful links, including to Post-Office Annual Glasgow Directory 1887-1888.  Found (page 448);

William MITCHELL, wine and spirit merchant, 291 & 293 Main St Bridgeton

I couldn't see any William Henry Mitchell listed in there, or Mitchell and Berry Co.

That's a good idea, Mo  :) Wider listing of the Glasgow Post Office Directories here http://www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office/index.cfm?place=Glasgow

Catheyt, do you know what kind of business Mitchell & Berry was?
