I think's it's probably a very bad E, like a lower case e but written as a capital, and the way the registrar has joined the writing between the 1 and the E has confused it.

There are Mackeys living at Emily place on the 1901 census  - any connection?

Moderator Note - Typing in all capital letters is considered shouting, which I'm sure you didn't mean to do. I've edited the text to more normal case.

I just looked at the Mackeys living at 10 Emily Place in the 1901 Census.  I don't think there is a connection, but thanks for pointing that out.

In 1901, 10 Emily Place.  Frank and  Mary Mackey (nee Keenan) lived with their children. One of which was my grandfather Michael Mackey.

There were families with the surname Macken. Indeed my grandfather's birth cert is something to behold if you want to see how even a registrar could get it wrong. Also in North Dock were a family by the name of Mackesy.

As far as my research goes all the Mackey's were related.

Emily Place can be seen on the OSI map of the area C.1897.  It was off Sherriff Street, just a few yards from St Laurence O'Tooles Church. Its now redeveloped, as a street it no longer exists.

The interesting thing is that there were several lanes of cottages off Mayor Street, Sheriff Street. Brady's Cottages, Orrs Cottages, Emily Place etc. In looking at Griffiths it looks like the  1st cottage was occupied by the owner or landlord.
