KIDD surname yDNA Studies
« on: Thursday 27 January 11 13:32 GMT (UK) »
I was wondering if there might be any male KIDDs interested in testing their yDNA to search for Kidd lineage matches in England/Scotland. My lineage comes from Fife, but likely derives from Dundee, and many other Kidds have tested at FamilyTreeDNA (who hold the most comprehensive database; www.familytreedna.com). Currently, there are likely genetic sources in Yorkshire, Eastern England (Lincolnshire/East Anglia) and Scotland, but we expect other origins in the Eastern English-Scottish Borders, Lancashire, Staffordshire and the Midlands. These tests can establish an approximate Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor (TMRCA), if they are near genetic matches, and from there we search the paper trails for potential common ancestors. Anyone interested in this research, please contact me.

I suppose the question most people would ask - How much does it cost?

I have Kidd ancestry from Staffordshire and Derbyshire

Your best contact is Sandra Kidd (admin for the Kidd Surname Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Kidd/default.aspx?section=news).
The cost is $169 for a 37-marker yDNA test (considered the most appropriate, although 12- and 25- marker tests are available), and there is a small discount if you apply through the surname project itself, rather than independently. At certain times of the year (eg Christmas) there is often a 'sale' giving about a $30-40 discount. If one has a solid paper trail of Kidds located in Eastern England or Scotland, there is also a chance of some sponsorship.

My ancestry is West Yorkshire. I just checked familtreedna and their results at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/kidd are nearly all in America. Only four in Great Britain and only one person in West Yorkshire has entered ! Isn't there a Britain-based project with more likely-hood of matches?

Yes, most participants are American, searching for their British roots. However, some can be traced back to Yorkshire via Ireland, and one Yorkshireman comes from East Riding (his deep yDNA roots actually match those of Thomas Jefferson, who likely traces back to Yorkshire via Snowdonia; their common ancestor is pre-1700). I don't know of any British-based Kidd DNA study and, indeed, the American's would be ecstatic if one was started as they could then stand a better chance of finding geographical localities where their roots lie.
