Trying to find the missing years for Margaret Oldfield  around the 1881 and 1891 census.  Husband John was living with someone else Elizabeth in Wigan   in the 1881 census but took his 20 Year old daughter with him. New to genealogy and struggling al little.

Hi brits3

Are John and Margaret living at Foundary Yard, School St in the 1861 census with children Charles and Mary Ann? Just trying to establish whether they are the correct family.

Have you found the children in later census, is she with them?

Have you found her in any census after 1891?

Do you know what Margarets maiden name was, perhaps she is hiding under that!

Regards

Z :)

Hello there yes you have the right Oldfields. I can't trace Margaret Oldfield on the 1881 cenus and 1891 one, but she re-surfaces on 1901 census as adoptive mother aged 65 of my 16 year old grandfather Edwin Ramsdale,  Upper Morris Street, Wigan.  My great grandmother Esther Edwin's mother had died in1898 aged 37 at the same address,  no father mentioned on Edwin's birth certificate.

Looks like on the 1881 census John Oldfield was living with someone called Elizabeth and taken his daughter Mary Ann with him and was a licensed victullar (not sure if that is the correct way to spell his occupation)

Many thanks

Hi brits3

Sorry, I am unable to find anything obvious at present!!!! Ooh how frustrating!!!!

Cannot find her under the surname of Oldfield, although this could have been mistranscribed but for two consecutive census I am not so sure!!!!

So is she listed under another surname - her maiden name possibly? Have you found her marriage to John? Or do you have one of the childrens birth certificates showing her maiden name?

And what is the connection with the Ramsdale family?

Regards

Z :)

Hi brits3

In the 1871 census there was a listing for a son - James Oldfield b 1857 Crewe Cheshire, however he is not with John and Margaret in the 1861 census, looking into this further he appears in the 1861 with:-

RG9 2772 107 18 - 1861 living at 23 Wellington St Wigan
Peter Farrell Head b abt 1872 Ireland Draper (Linen)
Margaret Wife b abt 1799 Lancashire
James Oldfield Nephew b 1857 Crewe Cheshire ( although I think it could be their grandson)

HO107 513 9 - Civil Parish Leigh 1841

Peter Farrell b 1783 Not in County "I" I think is Ireland - Weaver
Margaret b 1801 Lancs - Weaver
William b 1829 Lancs
Mary b 1831 Lancs
Margaret b 1836 Lancs -  Could  this be your Margaret?

HO107 2199 301 9 - Civil Parish Wigan 1851

Peter Farrell  Head b 1783 Durdalk Ireland Weaver Calico
M Wife b 1799 Bolton Lancs
W Son b 1829 Bolton Lancs

Margaret is not there but the family are in Wigan and then a marriage possibility?

Marriage for John Oldfield and Margaret Farrell Free BMD Dec 1854 Dist Wigan Vol 8c Pg 17

Apololgies if you have this already,  but thought if I could try and  find her maiden name then maybe she is hiding under this or with other members of her family!!!! Will go and look!!!

Hi brits3

Unfortunately I have been unable to find Margaret in both the 1881/1891 census, I have tried variations that I can think for her name Margie, Margery, Marjory, Marjorie, Madge, Mag, Maggie, Peggy and Meg!!!!!! I have tried various surnames Ramsdale, Farrell and Oldfield!!!!!!!!!!! I have also looked to see whether she is with other members of her family ........... but nothing obvious I'm afraid!!!!!! I looked at using just her initials M O and there was in the 1891 census Civil Parish Whittingham Lunatic Asylum a listing for M O b 1838 married Housekeeper wasn't that the occupation crossed out but given to Elizabeth with John in the 1881 census. Thoughts are could she be the Elizabeth in the 1881 census with her husband - Margaret Elizabeth? As John appears to be on his own in the 1891 census. Or maybe like her husband she found a new partner and took his name in the 1881/91 census.

Marriage on Lancashire Online Parish Clerk Project:-  29th Oct 1854 All Saints Hindley Lancs
John Oldfield X 22 Collier Bachelor of Hindley
Margaret Farrell 19 Factory Operative Spinster of Hindley
Grooms Father: James Oldfield Servant
Brides Father: Peter Farrell Draper
Witness John Hart x - Anne Stanway x - Married by Banns

I also note with interest that in the 1881 census there is an Esther Ramsdale b 1862 Wigan Lancs Domestic Servant - Edwins mother? And appears to be in the next street from John Oldfield and Elizabeth as they are at 95 Scholes St and Esther is at 9 Wellington St.

Good Luck with your Research

Regards

Z :)

brits3  - see my post under your query in Lancashire

z - thanks for the M O find in 1891. I had wondered if Margaret had had a breakdown following a horrendous couple of years and had been committed. I contacted Whittingham to ask if she was an inmate in 1881 - which she was not. I might retry using the census entry as background.

brits3 - see my reply on the lancashire board

z - thanks for the 1891 M O find. I had wondered whether Margaret had had a breakdown following a couple of horrendous years and had contacted Wittingham to ask. They are in the process of putting the index on-line but searched for me and did not find her. I might have asked a too specific question as I was trying to find her round 1876 when her husband remarried. I might try again using the census record as a base if only to rule  this out.
