birth records- help needed. POTTER
« on: Saturday 01 January 11 22:01 GMT (UK) »
I'm searching for the birthplace of George Potter b1884/1885.

The Port Glasgow 1901 census lists him as being age 16, birthplace Ireland.
*From other resources I know that his father George Henry Potter was born in 1850 in Kelvedon, Essex
*His Mother Mary Jane Freeman was born in Ireland (unsure of county).
*His mother and father were married in Derry in 1872

Another discussion board suggested that Portrush may be a place to look, but I personally had no luck in my searches. I also found one record for a George Potter born Oct-Dec 1884 in Larne, but had no luck with finding any follow up information.

Im hoping some seasoned searchers may be able to guide me.

Thanks, Caroline :)

Hi
I am searching for a few brothers and sisters and as much as I've tried I can not find a single record for any of their births. In the 1901 census it lists them as being born in Ireland but I haven't had any success in searching. Hoping someone could take a fresh look?

Their parents are George Henry Potter (born 1855) and Mary Jane Freeman (born Ireland 1857). These parents married in Coleraine, Londonderry in Dec 1872.

I have found one record for a Mary Ann Potter born in Derry in Dec 1873 and I believe this is their child. They also had a son James Potter born in Port Glasgow, Scotland in 1876.

The three birth records I am searching for are for

Henrietta Potter (1883)
George Potter (1885)
Harriet Potter(1887)

Any information would be excellent.

Thanks, Caroline :)

The best match that I see for George on the BMD Index is this one :

 Name: George Potter
 Registration district : Larne
 Event type : Birth
Quarter and year :   Oct - Dec 1884
 Volume : 1 /  page : 537

have you already tried a cert for that ?

there's a quite a good match for Henrietta's birth in the same district as her parents marriage :

 Henrietta Potter
 Registration district: Coleraine
 Event type: Birth
 Quarter and year: Jan-Mar 1882
 volume :   1 / page : 461

You would need to order a cert using the references from the BMD Index to find the full details - see :

Really appreciate the replys

Shanew147- I have previously done a bit of research into the Larne record for the George you refered to and had forgotten about it. At the time I didn't think that it matched to the other info I had so I had cancelled it out but I will have another look. Thanks for looking up Henrietta, I just wish that a few other details where available before you purchase the certs.

Kingskerswell- Yes I am pretty sure that this Mary Ann is another sibling but I have the feeling she may have died at a young age. No one in the family seems to recall her or have any records or pictures of her, and she is not mentioned in the 1901 census with the other siblings (although at that time she would have been 27 and possibly married, living elsewhere).

Agahdowey- I posted this and I never recieved a reply about the portrsh connection. Since then I had tracked down a bit more info on the Larne record, but as I said above, I don't think it matched.

Hi Caroline,
George Potter is the brother of my great grandfather James Potter.  James was born in Port Glasgow 1876 but it seems the four others were born in Ireland.  I have the birth records for Henrietta and Mary Ann - haven't yet found George's or Harriett's.  Would love to keep in touch with you and see just where you fit in in the family tree.  I have photos of George when he was young........he married Maggie Purdie yes?
looking forward to hearing from you
