Salmon family Stoke Ferry
« on: Thursday 27 January 11 01:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm trying to find some information on a Salmon family in Stoke Ferry.

The furthest I've been able to trace was a Thomas Salmon, who was born around 1774 in Stoke Ferry.  He died on May 4, 1852 in Stoke Ferry.

Thomas married Elizabeth Drew on August 3, 1801.

Their kids were:
Richard Salmon
Frederick Salmon
Edward Salmon
Elizabeth Drew Salmon
Robert Page Salmon
Clare Sewell Salmon (my descendant)

If anyone has any more info on this family, particularly anything about Thomas' parents, it would be greatly appreciated.  I've hit a wall here, and just can't seem to find anything past Thomas.

Hi,

Have you tried the IGI yet?  There are several "extracted" entries for Thomas Salmon being baptised in Norwich parishes and one in particular is a Thomas s/o Richard & Ann Salmon bapt. 2-10-1774 St.Benedict, Norwich.

Also do you know that a lot of parish registers for Norfolk are available to view on-line. Go to this address; http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#r=1;p=allCollections

scroll down to the bottom for UK and select your choice. In the marriage of Thomas to Elizabeth I see she was "a minor aged 18 years and upwards ...married with consent of mother" The original register is viewable - go to Stoke Ferry, marriages 1754-1821, and select image 18 of 30 to see the entry.

I hope I'm not telling you something you already know.

Hi Alan,

Thank you for passing that along.

I did actually find a link to that familysearch site not long after I made my original post.  I found a marriage document, not the exact one that you posted, but something similar.

I tried to find a baptism for Thomas in Stoke Ferry, and couldn't find one, so maybe if he was baptised in Norwich, that could explain why I couldn't find anything.

The info I have says he was born in Stoke Ferry, but could it be possible that the parents may have taken him to Norwich, which seemed to be a bigger city, to be baptised?

I know that Thomas and Elizabeth had their children baptised at All Saints church in Stoke Ferry, but if Thomas was taken to Norwich, or was actually born in Norwich, that might explain why I couldn't find a record of his baptism in Stoke Ferry.

As far as Richard and Ann Salmon being possible parents, that makes sense, as both those names show up regularly throughout the generations.  Thomas had a son named Richard, and the name Ann shows up several times as well.

I have something else I was wondering about.  There was also a George Salmon in Stoke Ferry around this time.  He was married to a Susan, or Susannah, and their children were baptised in Stoke Ferry a few years after Thomas and Elizabeth's children were.  So I'm thinking he and my Thomas Salmon would have been close to the same age.

I'm not sure how many people lived in Stoke Ferry in the late 1700s / early 1800s, but with it being fairly small, I'm wondering what the chances would be that my Thomas and this George Salmon may have been related?  I've always been of the impression that usually when the same surname shows up in a small town / village, that usually they're related.
