Elizabeth Williams - Denbighshire
« on: Wednesday 26 January 11 22:01 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the correct Elizabeth Williams!  She married John Crankshaw in Ramsbottom in 1877, aged 19 and her fathers name was on the certificate as William Williams.  On every census I can find after she married, she states she was born in Denbigh.  I know anything about her before she was married.

Anyone got any good tips on researching in Denbighshire?

When you say "Denbigh"  are you being specific that they lived in the town of Denbigh and not just the County?

We could narrow the search area  if you believed it to be the town of Denbigh.

What was the occupation of William Williams,  and have you got a copy of the wedding cert?

On most of the census returns it does say Denbigh, Denbighshire.  I do have the marriage cert, but we are waiting to move house and its packed away!  I do have it on my computer at work as I scanned them all in.  I thought I had attached it in Ancestry, but I haven't.  I will have to check when I'm at work tomorrow and post it on here.  I have the feeling he was an Ag Lab though...

On the marriage certificate:

6 January 1877, Parish of Ramsbottom, Lancashire
John Crankshaw, 22, bach, railway porter, 4 King Street, Ramsbottom, father, Richard Crankshaw, weaver
Elizabeth Williams, 20, spin, 4 King Street, Ramsbottom, father William Williams, Brewer
witnesses: Thomas Williams, Ann Jane Williams

Can anyone help with locating William Williams, the brewer????

Did a search of the 1861 census by occupation and name of William Williams. The only one that came back was as follows.

Address: Bridge Street, Ruthin, Denbigh.

William Williams aged 39, Brewer by trade

Elizabeth Williams (Wife) aged 39

Mary Davies aged 66 Widow...........Could be Williams Mother-in-law as same name as Thomas Davies

Thomas Davies aged 11 Nephew (Born in Chester)

Census Ref: RG09, Piece 4290, Folio 75, Page 10

Possible that the witness at the marriage are relations of Elizabeth.

Hope this helps.

Just had a quick look at the 1851 census, only one William Williams, Brewer, age 27 born Llanrhydd Denbighshire, unmarried. He was working for Hugh Davies at "The George Inn" Market Street, Ruthin.

Despite the glaring discrepancy in her father's profession,it looks like Elizabeth is the daughter of William Williams(shoemaker) and Ellen of Panton Hall Denbigh.
The 1861 census is probably missing, but there is an FindMyPast parish baptism, of 1858,and
1871   5672  38  7   (where she has a brother Thomas)
and tellingly, though she is married and living in 1881 in Lancashire, back in Denbighshire,William and Ellen Williams have with them an Elizabeth E Crashaw(sic),grand daughter(5532  39  15),who reappears with John and Elizabeth Crankshaw in 1891 in Lancashire.

Roger
