Many of the RC films only cover up to about 1880, as the aim of these was to make records available up the timeframe where civil records were more reliable.

I thought it was because of a 75 year embargo when they were filmed circa 1955.

That reasoning would certainly fit, as I have read that most of the filming was carried out in the 1950s and early 60s (J. Grenham etc). Maybe the note I read about covering the start of civil records was an assumption. I'll have to see if I can remember where I read that detail now..
