Marriage Licence Parish Church Rochdale

Hullo there,

has anyone any idea where a marriage licence for the parish church in Rochdale would be found?  My 2xgrt. grandparents were married there in 1847 by licence, and I'm having trouble finding any more about them.

They were James Haworth and Mary Jaques, and fathers were Peter Haworth, innkeeper, and James Jaques, office clerk.

James and his brothers were born in Halifax, and later lived in Pendleton (Salford), but I cannot find his birth.  I thought his marriage licence might give me a clue.

HI DAHLIA, THEY WERE MARRIED 11/01/1847 IN ROCHDALE LANCS ST CHAD, I COULDN'T FIND HIS BIRTH THOUGH, THE ONLY ONE SHOWING UP WAS 1810 FATHER PETER BUT BORN IN LANCS NOT YORKSHIRE & THAT WOULD MAKE HIM AROUND 37 WHEN HE MARRIED.

Thanks both of you for looking.  I already have the marriage certificate which I found on Lancs BMD.  I now want to follow up the fact that they were married by licence, and would like to know where I am likely to find that.

My James Haworth was born in Halifax around 1820/21, but I believe his brother Joseph Wilkinson Haworth was born around 1805 in Bolton, so I think there are more Lancashire links.

You could Phone or write to the Church in which thay where Married and ask where the Marriage Licence's are Kept

Dear Iria

Thanks for that.  I'm always a bit wary of contacting churches, as I think they have better things to do than family history, but I might try it as I have had no success elsewhere.

I should try the Registrar's at Rochdale as it sounds as though they needed a license because neither of them was living in the district for the required number of days prior to marrying at the church (now 15 days).

If neither partner lives within the parish where they are marrying a license was needed to enable them to marry within one day of coming into the parish.

Hi Dahlia My 4th Grt Granmother was Catherine Haworth the wife of John Lister Aked her father was Peter Haworth. I presume we are looking at the same family?  I am new to Roots Chat so please bear with me. Cheers Currier
