marriage look up William Crowther, Catherine Ellis

hi I am trying to find the first marriage of William Crowther born c1833 Tadcaster Yorkshire and Catherine Ellis born c1839 Manchester died 19 July 1877 18 North Street Rochdale aged 40.
Williams Father on his second marriage in 1878 to Mary Banks  is given as Richard Crowther wine and Spirit merchant deceased the marriage was at the Wesleyan Chapel union street Rochadale
I am happy with the maiden name for Catherine which i got from two birth certificates of their children Mary Ellen Crowther born 1 May 1864 and Richard born 18 June 1869 both born in Liverpool. First child born c1860 Thomas Crowther  born Manchester.
From the Family search i have a Catherine Ellis baptism 9 April 1837 Manchester Cathedral father Richard Ellis mother Ann Wood
Any Help appreciated to break down this wall.

I can't find a marriage anywhere for them. I wonder if they married in a non-conformist Church? Or maybe they didn't marry.

Thanks for looking, all I can say is that death cert for Catherine says wife of William Crowther. I need to go down the road of non conformist marriage any ideas how to do this.

Hi Kevin

What I do is try and find a map of the area where they lived so you can locate the first address you have for them. Then I move in ever increasing circles around it to see if I can find a Non-Conformist Church or Churches and then try to find the registers for that denomination. Try googling genuki Liverpool, then click on maps on the right hand side. It will take you to Maps, click on it and go to Old Maps. Choose one that is closest in date to the info you've got and start looking. It's time consuming but worth it.

If you can find the Baptisms of Mary Ellen and Richard it may give you an idea of what denomination they were and we can then then see if we can find a marriage in either Liverpool or Manchester. It's a long shot I know but it's worth a try.

1861 census has William as 26, Catherine as 24 and Thomas as 2, in Leeds. I can't see a matching birth registration for Thomas under Crowther - may be he wasn't registered or may be they weren't married.

All legal marriages should be indexed wherever they took place, so it shouldn't matter whether the marriage was in a non-conformist chapel or the C of E or elsewhere - human error can always mean there are missing or incorrect entries, so it worth trying as many sources as possible including LancashireBMD and YorkshireBMD where the indices are being compiled from the registers at local office.

Another possibility is that Catherine was married before and any marriage to Thomas would then be indexed under her married name. Strictly both previous names should then appear on the children's birth certificates but that would only happen if the Registrar knew and I've got an example where it didn't happen.
