I believe my Grandfather Andrew Craig Hamilton & his mother are buried in the same grave in Hamilton Old Church. There is also the possibility that other Members of his family are buried there.
I wonder if you have photo photos of their graves among your Hamilton ones. Do you have a list?

Hello Going Spare 1, welcome to Rootschat,

Can you supply dates of death for any of your grandfather's family?
Hamilton parish churchyard was closed for interments in November 1861.

Gt Grandmother was 1892, Grandfather was 1903, however it was an existing family grave so I understand they were still allowed to be buried in it as it didn't involve a new Grave.
I visited Scotland on 1968 & went looking for the grave, I found it, but, being young & silly  & not all that interested in family history then I did not take a photo or make notes of who besides my Grandfather was buried there. I still kick myself!

The churchyard was closed for burials on 30th November 1861. That meant no more burials. The records of the time say that there were so many bodies buried just below the surface that the smell was awful.
I have checked the book of Monumental Inscriptions and, as far as I can see, the last interment took place in January 1862. This was for the wife of a local lawyer in the town and there may have been some strings pulled, or, it may be that the decree by the town council didn't come into force until after this January 1862 burial.
There are absolutely no inscriptions as late as the 1890s/1900s.

It would really help in future if you could supply full names, maiden surnames for married woman and exact dates of deaths. You mention a great-grandmother but no names or a date of death.
We all try to help in this Forum but we do need something to go on. The surname Hamilton is mentioned on 46 of the stones in the old churchyard.

Your family may be in the Bent cemetery or the West cemetery. Perhaps even in the old Relief Church burial ground behind the Town Hall, that may still have been there in 1968, I'm unsure.

Hi Going Spare

There are no burials recorded in Bent Cemetery, Hamilton (1853-1949), for your Andrew Craig Hamilton, Mary Hamilton (née Craig) or David Hamilton.

However, intimations of the deaths of David and Mary Hamilton were published in the Glasgow Herald but no place of interment was cited.

Suddenly, at Brandon Hotel, Motherwell, on the 24th inst., DAVID HAMILTON, aged 50 years. -- Friends omitted will kindly accept of this intimation. -- Glasgow Herald, 27 January 1894

HAMILTON -- Suddenly, on Saturday morning, at 8 Brandon Street, Motherwell, Mary Craig, widow of the late D. Hamilton, late of the Brandon Hotel. -- All friends omitted, kindly accept this intimation. -- Glasgow Herald, 29 February 1892

Cheers,

Rodeo
