Easton family in sunderland
« on: Tuesday 25 January 11 13:17 GMT (UK) »
Please help!

I'm looking into the family of my Great great Grandma Eleanor Easton. I have here birth certificate and she was born in 1844 in Ballast hills, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland. She was the daughter of James Easton and Jane Piercy . I am trying to find out about her siblings. From the census I've found a William Dowie Easton, James Easton and Elizabeth Easton. James died without children and William married twice and had lots of kids, and I can find no record of Elizabeth after 1851.

What is puzzeling me is that I've found the baptism of William Dowie on the 6 December 1834 in Newcastle to James and Jane Dowie, but I've also found the marriage of James Easton and Jane Piercy on the 2 Feb 1834 in Newcastle. So was James a bigamist or is one of the records wrong. Just to show I have the right Eleanor Easton her daughter had the middle name Piercy.

Can anyone offer any help please
Thanks PootleFlump :)

Not with you here - marriage February 1834 - baptism December 1834 - where does bigamy feature?  Looks like they had to get married though

Perhaps Jane's mothers maiden name was  Dowie  and the transcriber has made an error and missed the Piercy

Looking at the IGI marriage entry - she is transcribed as RIEREY

I think PF may be referring to different surnames, Dowie at the baptism and Easton/Piercy at the marriage.

It doesn't seem likely that they are the same people, but it could be possible that William Dowie later became an Easton for some reason. Perhaps he was orphaned and the Easton family adopted him???

You may want to bear this IGI entry in mind for later in your research.  Jane's birthplace is shown as Norham 1809 but Durham not Northumberland

Roger Piercy   Birth:  1783   Of, Norham, Northumberland    Spouse:  Ann Boyd     Marriage:  21 AUG 1808   Norham, Northumberland

James Easton     Spouse:  Jane Rierey   Marriage:  02 FEB 1834   St John Parish, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland

1851 census has son William Dowie Easton aged 16 living with James & Jane

1841 has William aged 7 living with them

That is really confusing, unless Jane was a widow at marriage, ie. Jane Piercy nee Dowie.  ???

I think it's one of 2 possibilities

The middle name of Dowie has been confused with Jane's surname, either on the original or the transcription

About 2yrs ago - I was helping a friend research his FH and found an IGI entry for his ancestor with the right parents names - but father had a different surname

Somebody looked it up for me in Norfolk and his "surname" was his middle christian name which was the first time I knew he had one.  His surname had been left off by the transcriber

Samuel Lee Howard was shown as Samuel Lee

I can sympathise with the transcribers when they come across a baptism like David son of Samuel Lee and Jane Howard  :-\

It is unlikely to happen on the mother's name, so I'm betting on her being a widow.

If she was a widow - wouldn't she have married Easton as Jane Dowie and not Jane Piercey?
