Have you seen this?:-

http://www.scarr.org/newsletter.htm

"A John went to Todmorden on the border of Lancashire and the family spread to various parts of both Yorkshire and Lancashire."

Can't see the name of the author though or any contact details.

Hi Luzzu,
Mnay thanks for this information - I had a quick squint on the Todmorden/Walsden link at the census and found one SCARR family (Theywere transcribed as LEAN - the mind boggles) in Part I residing at Todmorden Barn Hall. I recognised them immediately despite the mistranscription.
As yet I haven't found a connection for the Robert RADCLIFFE/Susanna SCARR  marriage but will keep a note of it - just in case.
The newletter I have printed off and will read later today.

Cheers ,
George.

Hello

I am new to researching family history and by chance I stumbled across this site with posts relating to the Scarr family of Todmorden.  My grandmother was Mary Scarr, the daughter of Richard Scarr (born 1851).

I would be grateful for any details relating to this family, past or present.

TIA.

Hi Wokling,
I am having difficulty in responding to your message. Please confirm your Grandmother's Married Surname and the number of children she had.
I do not wish to offend you but I have been duped a couple of times into providing information.
Iban.

Unfortunately this newsletter is not available online anymore but I have a copy of it. It was authored by Roy Scarr. Much research that everyone has on the Scarrs is attributed to him even though it was full of errors. Roy and I communicated quite frequently about 18 years ago!

Re Todmordon: not sure if this is useful but here is a snippet from my notes re James Scarr 19 Feb 1797 Spennithorne, Yorks who married Betty Ingham. James' parents were John Scarr (Hamby, Askrigg, a Mason) and Hannah Whitton. I don't have a Richard to this couple but have several other children. Here are the notes for James:
"Found a son John to James (a Mason) and Betty born in the DogHouse!. Baptised 17 Apr 1840. Also a son James baptised 23 May 1847 (his father james a Stone Mason.) This means his father James was still alive in 1847. Son James was baptised in Stansfield which is serviced by the post office in Todmorden."

Note this Todmoden lineage flows back to George Scarr and Sarah Coates of Helm. Many of the Helm Scarrs were stone masons. This is also my lineage.
Researching Scarr/Skarr and Kettlewell from Akrigg/Aysgarth areas.

Have you tried "Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion"? Trouble is, once you start looking in it, you'll be online for hours.

Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)
