J. H. HOUGHTON Medal Card query
« on: Tuesday 25 January 11 12:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Could someone please help me with my Grandads' WW1 Medal Record. I have downloaded a N.A. copy of it, but there are six on the page and my Grandads is the odd one out.  His is the only card with 1914 15 at the top and also only one with the medals won, in the top right corner.
   The heading has:    Campaign----1914 15.
Underneath:            JOHN H. HOUGHTON 2/ High L.I. and rank.
   Below that:              Action taken---Demob
Then:                       THEATRE OF WAR [1] France
   Then:                       QUALIFYING DATE  30.9.15
I know that he was in the Highland Light Infantry, but the only other info I have is that it's thought my Grandad may have been gassed, and also that he never collected his 3 medals. Does this card mean that he was gassed and then demobbed on 30.9.15? Would he have had to collect his medals or were they sent out as in WW2? And Lastly, does anyone know where in France he may have fought with the 2nd Bat. H.L.I. Would the info on the ROLL on the card help? I have tried to find some of this out, but as the H.L.I. were amalgamated a while ago, I have got a bit lost. Thanks for any help.

The card tells you that he sailed for France on 30/09/1915, which qualified him for the 1914-1915 Star in addition to his British War Medal and Victory medal.

He was demobilized, probably in 1919. His medals would have been sent to his last known address, probably sometime around 1921.

There were a couple of different formats for the Medal Cards, hence the difference between this one and the others.

In terms of where he may have fought in France you might find the 'The Long, Long Trail ' site useful. It's URL is http://www.1914-1918.net/.

It should give you some details about the H.L.I. 2nd Battalion and if you trace the Brigade & Division it was assigned to, i.e. 5th Brigade in 2nd Division, the Order of Battle section should list the battles that he may have been involved in.

Regards, Ian.
