Hadley, Josiah 42, engineer, ex Staffordshire, emigrated on "Strathallan" 14/10/1858-21/1/1859 with wife 39.
1862. notice of claim to vote, address Hereford Street, Christchurch.

353 Hadley, Josiah Christchurch leasehold part section 984 (this could be traced to a specific address).
Christiana should appear in the first electoral roll for women and later rolls - may be able to check when I'm in Christchurch next week.
Jos Hadley will 19/8/1875, d 9/12/1875, will proven 23/12/1875 50 Pounds executor Christina Hadley legatee/nok, his widow.

Josiah was an engineer, boilermaker, well-sinker and sank the first well in Christchurch opposite Tattersall's in Cashel Street, Christchurch. Also made lighting gas from resinous gum and tallow - for an entertainment company operating in the ChCh Town Hall. Entire business was sold in 1871.
Brother John (1819-1901) emigrated from Staffordshire on the "Orari" 25/4/1879-26/7/1879 with wife and 6 children. Although recorded as a "farm labourer" in the ship's list, in Christchurch he was an iron moulder, and exhibited a kitchen stove in a Christchurch exhibition (?Agricultural and Pastoral Show). John's son Henry married in Kaiapoi, Margaretta Ross, 7/6/1893, daught of Robert and Eleanor (maiden name Page). (Registration number 1893/1812).
