Dunfermline cricket circa 1933

This photo has my father, James Kent, back row second right, and his friend George Orr front right. They both attended Queen Anne High school, and were keen Scouts. Can anyone identify the Cricket Club, or does anyone have information relating to cricket in Dunfermline around that time?

Hi Manick,

Can't say much about cricket in Dunfermline, and nothing about Queen Anne School, although now-deceased relatives of mine went there, I believe.

Dunfermline's Cricket Club was started in 1857, and they leased their own cricket field at Ladysmill at the south end of the town from 1879.  In 1906 this field was bought by a local man, John McKane, who'd emigrated to the USA and become a millionaire.  He presented the field to the Club, which was then named McKane Park.  It is still (or was, fairly recently) used for cricket matches, though I've heard of a scheme to have it sold off for housing "development". 

Dunfermline CC seem to have had their best seasons in the 1930s, winning various championships. 

Maybe Queen Anne played at McKane Park?  Pity your photo doesn't show more background!

Just browsing around the family history - my Father (Tony Mills) coached the Fife team in the 60s at McKane Park - I should know because at the age of 8ish to 10ish I trained with some of the best there.

I think you might look at other cricket clubs in the area - Carnegie CC, Townhill CC and Broomhall CC spring to mind. At one time there was a Public Works league for but I think that may have been fiinished by the 1930s. Next time I'm at the Local History Department of the library I'll see if I can find anything. Cricket references in a search of the Dunfermline Heritage project are almost all associated with Dunfermline CC
