From the details we do have I think James was from Australia, possibly with scottish parents. However Lucas is not common in Scotland.

And I thought "Aussies behind every bar" was a recent thing!
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

You say he isnt from Australia,
did you look at the census for  a Francis Lucas born 1839 in Billinge Lancashire.he is a stone mason,
there may be a family connection,
1881,

RG 11/3783.

In the 1861 census he is the son of Hugh Lucas also a stonemason,

RG9/2785,
just another Lucas family to look at,
Gunning County Down,Kneale Isle of Man,Riddle Tynemouth,Bibby Kendal/Bradford,Colenso Penzance/Barrow-in-Furness,Steele Corney Fell,Chapman Ely,Dawes Alfreton,Blamire Westmoreland and Ulverston

No I don't think so, it's just confusing as the 1901 census for him says he was born in Scotland but the 1911 says he was born in Newcastle Wales I can't find anything for him with his fathers name for either

It would appear you have only seen the incorrect transcription,.  May I suggest taking a look at the actual image.

thanks scouseboy, that's correct it's in Monmouth but I still can't find anything for him there his father was Francis and is listed as a sheep farmer who was deceased by the time James remarried in 1907 and his marraige states him as 46 which ties in with 1865 birth date

Hi Steve have you looked at the original 1911 yet?
Funny in all my time in researching, I can never recall a Farmer in the UK being called a "Sheep Farmer" in OZ yes!
