OWENS, Drumcrow West and/or Rosscrennagh
« on: Sunday 23 January 11 21:53 GMT (UK) »
Giving some attention to my mother's side of the family:
I'm looking for information about the OWENS family possibly of Rosscrennagh and Rossharbour area.
John II OWENS d. 1844, was married to Isabella BRANDON b.1800, d.1888.
   Children: John III b. 1828, James b. 1831, Matthew b.1834, Mary b. 1839, Eleanor b. 1842, possibly Liza b. unknown

John I OWENS possibly of Drumcrow West just across Lough Erne from Rossharbour.  No b. or d. found.  Married twice, neither spouse found.
First child of 8 from first marriage supposedly Rev. Thomas OWENS ordained by John Wesley, served Methodist Church from 1785 to death in 1808.
First child of 4 from second marriage supposedly John II OWENS.

Usual rewards of liquid refreshment offered for leads, payable in May/June '11 in the vicinity of Lough Erne.

Thanks
Carl

All the children of John II and Isabella were born or baptised in Rossharbour or Rosscrennagh.
Upon the death of John II, Isabella remarried to a cousin, Francis BRANDON, then emigrated with family to Canada in 1846 aboard the Unicorn out of Killybegs, Co. Donegal.

I have been unable to find a Reverend Thomas OWENS, but have found traces of a Reverend Thomas OVENS, and traces of other Ovens' in the Drumcrow area.  Current thinking is that these are two spellings of the same family name.  Any suggestions?
Cheers
Carl

Carl,
The Public Record office in Belfast has wills, complete with images, of three Ovens from Drumcrow, Robert d 1889, Elizabeth D1907 and James Died 1907. See http://applications.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar/WillsSearch.aspx

Thank you Kingkerswell.  While I can't establish a connection to those particular individuals, I'm very pleased that you led me to the wills database.  I hadn't figured out how to use it until your post.
Cheers

Carl,
Another tip for the PRONI Wills site. If you only enter the name of the townland where it says FULL ABSTRACT you will get access to all the wills left by people in that townland.

Just be careful as it doesn't pick up spelling variations in Full Abstract box.

More tips:
- it will search for part of a name so 'Owen' will show Owen, Owens.
- you can also sort results by sate of death, date of grant, surname
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Carl, we must be cousins. You certainly have all the info I have on my 3rd-gt-grandparents John Owens and Isabella Brandon, through their daughter Eliza Jane Owens (who m Henry McVety in 1856) and, in fact, you have more info - such as the ship they came on, and the parish where they were baptised. On the other hand, you may not have some of the info I found years ago about John's half-brother Rev. Thomas Owens, who was ordained by John Wesley himself as a Methodist minister and went as a missionary to the Caribbean, serving in Antigua and St. Kitts & Nevis. I'm excited to see from your profile that you're in Yukon (hopefully safe from both the current COVID outbreak and the Yukon R flooding) since I'm in Kingston ON and have family in Whitehorse. If you're willing to correspond outside of rootschat, let me know your email address and I will reply. (I find the captcha process very difficult to decipher.) cutwayn
