Confused about surname - Dittison or Rhynd?
« on: Sunday 23 January 11 19:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with a surname issue I'm having :)

I'm trying to find more details of a maternal line in my tree.

Catherine Lawson was born in 1811, Dalgetty, Fife and died 24 Apr 1884.
She married Walter Muir on 28 Sep 1833, also in Dalgetty, Fife.

Seoras very kindly helped me to find Catherine's parents from her death certificate - William Lawson and Agnes Dittison.

This is where I hit a brick wall and wondered if it was a newbie thing (which is why I've posted it here).

I've searched through all the usual haunts and can't find the surname Dittison. I've tried with wildcards but I just can't think what it could even be... (Tried Dillison, Disington, Dickson and a few others).

I've seen on a few family trees that another woman, Helen Rhynd, has been listed as Catherine's mother but I'm not overly convinced about this, especially as they are on family tress with no sources - and it does say Dittison on the death certificate.

Any help for a beginner? I'd be very grateful! :)

Are you looking for her marriage or her birth?

Have you tried searching for the marriage of William Lawson - see how many of them married an Agnes?

This could have been a second marriage in which case her birth name would have been different.

Hi C-side,

Thank you for the quick reply! I'm just looking for her at the moment - either a birth certificate or marriage would be great.

I hadn't thought about the second marriage idea... going to give that a try :)

Ta! :)

Hello all,

I'm still not having much luck with this one at all... I suppose one victory is that I know that Helen Rhynd is not in the picture.

I'm trying to find out who Agnes was - ideally I'd like to work up to the full trio of birth, marriage and death but right now anything would be a win!

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

What I know:

Catharine Muir was born Catharine Lawson in 1811(+/-) and she died on 24 Apr 1884. She married Walter Muir on 28 Sep 1833. All of this was in Dalgetty, Fife.

Catharine had a sister called Christina who was born 1801 in Aberdour, Fife and died on 15 Nov 1898 in Dalgetty, Fife.

Both sisters have William Lawson as their father. Their mother is stated as Agnes Dittison or Disington on their death certificates.

Giving this one last crack before it moves to the bottom of my pile :)

Thanks for looking!
