Anyone heading to St. John's in Halifax?

Anyone heading to St. John's in Halifax?

I've found a listing of a marriage of our Mary CROSSLAND to James BROOK(E), Dresser on 1 July 1818.
Reg. # 129
Abode: Elland

Can anyone do a look-up of the certificate and let me know further information that may be listed on it?  We're hopeful of finding parents' names or names of witnesses...

Thanks from the USA,
Holly

Hi

You will get witnesses names but mothers names are never shown on English marriage certs and fathers names were not included until 1.7.1837 when Civil Registration was introduced

Info on marriage entries for that period is very sparse

Thanks for the info.  It's a long shot, I know, but we have no information on her family and are hoping a name is listed somewhere...

Can you tell me where is the best place to pull a copy of their certificate?  Would it actually be at St. John's, or is there another location where records are held?

Thanks!

Hi

There is no actual certificate - it will be one of several entries in the parish register

I notice it is on the IGI and appears to have been at the Parish Church in Halifax

If somebody responds to your post and looks it up for you - they can probably email the copy to you

Failing that - your nearest LDS Family History Centre will be able to help and order the film for you

Funnily enough - my husband's great grandfather Richard Walsh married in Halifax in 1828 and I obtained a photostat of the entry.  It gave me no more info than I already had

This is the entry - Parish Church of Halifax

Richard Walsh of Elland - of this parish labourer and bachelor to Hannah Sanderson of this parish and spinster

Married by banns 10.2.1828

Richard signed his full signature but Hannah made her mark

Witnesses were William Staunton and Thomas Beaver.  Thomas Beaver witnessed other marriages on the same page so was possibly a church official

Richard is shown as "of this parish" but was actually born in Ireland

As long as you satisfied the 3 week residential qualification - you were shown as "of this parish"

I will be happy to email you a copy of the page if you want - just send me a pm with your email address

Hi,
Just to reiterate and clarify what Singing Susie said,
This marriage was at St John's Halifax, not St Mary's Elland.
regards,
Andy
