I`ve been extremely lucky and been able to get back to my 3x Great-Grandmother, who was born in 1813, in as far as I can make out, Northamptonshire. Her name was Joice/Joyce Farrow (nee Odell), married to James Farrow.
There`s a Mary Odell who had a daughter Joyce, but Mary owned slaves in Barbados in 1834.
Is there anyway to prove/disprove a connection when I can`t get into the records that far back.
Any help most gratefully received

Did you find her place of birth from the census's?
Where did they live? Any children?
Have you got their marriage certificate or seen a copy of the parish record entry?
What makes you think that your Joyce is relared to Mary Odell?

In the 1841 census Joice is living in Rushden and Thomas Odell, 25 is living nearby; he may be a brother.

In 1851 Joyce's birthplace is given as Irthlingborough (mistranscribed); Irchester, Rushden and Wellingborough are also close, so these 1841 census entries may also be connected:

Wellingborough (HO107/801): George Odell, 30; Louisa Odell 25; Philippa Odell, 55.

Irchester (HO107/802)
John Odel (transcribed as Adel), 50
Sarah Odel, 50
+ Samuel, 25; Isaac, 19; Elizabeth, 16; Jacob, 14; Rebecca, 10; Joses, 5
(In the 1851 census Sarah's birthplace is also Irthlingborough, although the children's was Irchester)

None of these may be connected, but they give alternative avenues to explore, particularly as Joyce may have called her son (John) after her father - although I have to say that Joyce isn't as biblical as the other names seem to be!

Her marriage certificate would, of course, give her father's name:

I have a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk
I worked backwards from my maternal grandmother:
Catherine Mary Rimmington (nee Middleditch) 1914-2002 , her mother:
Martha Ann Middleditch (nee Edwards)
Harriet Edwards (nee Farrow), her parents James Farrow and Joyce/Joice Odell, all of who I managed to find in various censuses the latter being 1841.
Joyce and James had 3 children, 2 sons, Joseph and John, and then a daughter Harriet, (who was born 1849 in Northamptonshire.
The dates/ages etc all match up as well as the areas they lived in. I didn`t think about buying the certs. until I could confirm I had the right people  

Joice/Joyce Odell would of been born in Barbados and her mother would of been about 21 if my estimations are near to the mark, (hopefully).
I did see an entry for Joyce Odell with mother Mary Odell, with a list of slaves owned in St. Thomas, Barbados.

I think you need to look at this carefully as Joyce clearly states her place of birth as Irthinglingborough on the 1851 census and others confirm that it is Northamptonshire.   Normally we would use certificates to prove relationships and then search census so you may be doing this the wrong way round.
Did you take the Barbados connection from the IGI or Ancestry?    I fear it may be an enormous red herring.  You need the marriage certificate for Joyce to prove her father's name and occupation.  The IGI does not cover all parishes so there may well be a baptism for Joyce in a church that is not on it.  Have you searched the parish register for Irthinglingborough as that is one of the parishes not on the IGI.

1861 reference is RG9 951 63 8.    Try searching for Harriet.    They stay in the Wellingborough area all the time which makes me even more convinced that Barbados is wrong.  By 1871 the younger siblings are living with brother Joseph so maybe the parents have died?  RG10 1479 60 34
Probably if you search for Farrow in Wellingborough they will pop up.  Less detail is often better.

Using Ancestry for 1861 if you put in Harriet Farrow born 1849 plus or minus 5 and residence Wellingborough, Northamptonshire it is the second record - Earls Barton.    I prefer the Old Search in Ancestry - it is much easier to use.

From the look of it I wasn`t too far off !!1  Only a few thousand miles 
But being serious, all the ages from the 1851 census I was using to the people you mentioned in the 1861 census all tally up with ages etc.
The weird thing is, Northampton isn`t that far from where I live now !!
