Isaac Grace - where have you gone??
« on: Friday 21 January 11 17:25 GMT (UK) »
I am attempting to track down the above, who appears to have gone AWOL in 1881!!!

I have a BIRTH in Q4 1871 in Widnes (Registered in Prescot under 8b 567), so after the 1871 census.

There is also a BAPTISM at All Saint's Church, Runcorn, Cheshire on 12th August 1872  Reg 1839 - 1886; Film 1656553 Mother's name : Elizabeth

I then have him in 1891 living at 68 Lugsdale Road, Widnes, Lancashire, England
By now, he is 19 and an Alkali labourer. Unmarried and staying with John & Jane Foster and family as a nephew.  Not sure if he is the nephew of the wife or the husband (Was wife's maiden name Grace?? or is husband's sister's married name Grace??)

By 1901 he is married with three children and living in Terrace Road, Widnes; the youngest child being my wife's mother.

Until I found the baptism info a couple of weeks ago, I had thought his mother was a Mary Ellen Davison, but the the baptism records Elizabeth as being the mother.

Unfortunately, there is a host of IG's, but I just cannot find a suitable IG born in Widnes in the 1881 census, when he should still be with his parents.

Any help &/or guidance would be  much appreciated

This seems to be Isaac with the same couple as 1891, although his surname is different:

1881
RG11/3724/94/6 - 67 Waterloo Rd, Widnes
John FORSTER  Head  23  Labourer  Garston, Lancs
Jane FORSTER  Wife  21  Appleton, Lancs
Mary HEYS  Mother  Widow  76  Appleton, Lancs
Henry GRACE  Uncle  Single  40  Appleton, Lancs
Isaac HEYS  Nephew  9  Scholar  Widnes, Lancs

It is possible that his mother died a little earlier:

Just a few thoughts

If you haven't seen the actual entry in the baptism register I would suggest you do. The vicar may have written in the birth date of the child which would help. Also it may give an address for the child. If this is the correct Isaac he is illegitimate.

Do you have your Isaac's marriage certificate? If so does he give a father's name?

Do you have your Isaac's birth certificate? If you don't I suggest this is the best way of finding out his parentage.

If the registration details you have given is your Issac - he was baptised at least 7/8 months after birth. No unheard off but he is also baptised on the other side of the river. Have you checked there wasn't an Isaac Grace born in Runcorn at that time?

PS Great find Manchester Rambler. The Heyes ties in with the brother in law Heyes on the 1891 census.

1871
RG10/3859/102/31 - 9 North St, Widnes
Mary HAYES  Head  46  Charwoman  Appleton
Elizabeth GRACE  Dau  Unm  23  Charwoman  Appleton
William GRACE  Son  Unm  20  Lab  Appleton
Jane Alice HAYES  Dau  9  Scholar  Appleton
John HAYES  Son  8  Scholar  Appleton
Henry GRACE  Brother  Unm  37  Lab  Appleton
Henry GRACE  Father  Wid  73  Lab  Hale Barn

Hayes, Heys and Grace all mixed up....  I presume Mary was born GRACE, and had at least 2 children (Elizabeth and William) before marrying a HAYES/HEYS.

Hey, what super sleuths you folks are!!

I had been toying with the idea that IG may have been illegitimate, following the discovery of the baptism certificate and the 1891 census data.

On the 1891 census, there is also a brother in law to the Head named John Heyes,
so that would fit the name change.

Obviously something to chew over regarding the name changes but as Man Ram says there is a lot of intermingling of names in the 1871 C

Thanks to you both for your interest and input.

I think a birth certificate is the way to go.
