St. Wilfreds RC Cemetery in Hulme.
« on: Friday 21 January 11 09:31 GMT (UK) »
HI Everyone:
I got some information from a family member that my 2nd great grandmother is buried in this cemetery.  I can see on google maps that it is no longer a church, but it appears there still might be a small cemetery there.  Is anyone close to this location and can anyone help me?  Her name was Mary Mitchell and we have a date of death of 10 Oct 1854 or it might be 1864.  Thanks in advance for the help!
-Mike

The only comment that I can make to this item is that I went to this primary school,  up to the age of 11 in 1947,  prior to going on to grammar school.  I do remember the small burial ground which was behind the church building,  abutting on to the playground.  The church of St. Wilfrid was located on Bedford Street whilst the access to the school was on Rutland Street and Clopton Street.  I am sure someone on the great site will be able to help you.

Thank you both.  Well at least you have confirmed there was a burial ground there so this is promising.  Thank you also for the web site as I have not been to that one yet.

I just recently got this information from another family member so we are still putting the pieces together, but this is so much fun searching and finding family from the past.

Based on the information and the census they lived very near this church.  However, I have noticed that a lot of the roads listed in the 1851 and 1861 census no longer are in the area.  I did find one street, but there is nothing built there from that time period and it is all industrial.

Thank you again for your input!

-Mike

A couple of links with some background info on St Wilfrid's:-

Just checked the church register list to see if there are any burial registers at Manchester library but they only have baptisms and marriages  :(.

If you put Birchvale Close, Hulme, Manchester on a "Google" Maps seach and then use the little yellow man it brings you on a street view outside St Wilfrid's Primary School and then you can see the church next door.  Can't see if the graveyard is still there though because I can't get the little yellow man to walk in the right direction  ::).

Yes I tried the little yellow man too and just can not find the cemetery.

You know I did have a thought... if the mother was buried at the church cemetery there is a good chance that some of the children may have been born or married at the same church.  Do you see many Mitchell or Mulligans?

Thanks again everyone!
