Pudding Lane. Taunton, Somerset
« on: Saturday 16 April 05 14:28 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if Pudding Lane in Taunton still exists? Have been told by a very elderly relative that she has memories of Pudding Lane. She may be refering to her parents having known of Pudding Lane.

I was born in Taunton and have lived here for almost all of my life ( 2 years away ). Not heard of it myself, though my mother aged 64 says " it rings a bell"

Regards

Nicola

Hi Nicola,

I posted about this last night. There's a thread later in this section mentioning someone's relative's birth in Pudding Lane, Taunton.

I to have lived in Taunton all my life and I'm also a bit of a local history buff - I have never heard of Pudding Lane, past or present. If you look at an old map of taunton, even in the 1800's, the town is tiny compared to now and it wouldn't have gone un-noticed.

The only thing that I can think of is that Taunton was riddled with courts and back alleys (all but a few of the courts are long gone). However, names like Blackboy Lane, Carpenter's Lane and Hunt's Court for example still exist but under different names but these are well documented in local history books. I had a flick through a few books in my ever growing local history collection and again - No Pudding Lane.

My family tree includes the names of Terry (London & Birmingham), Neve (London), Willson (London), Ponisovski (Russia and North of England), Hart (North of England) and Corkett

Hi Nicola

I went to school in Taunton about 20 years ago & vaguely remember a Pudding Lane however I think it was only called Pudding Lane as a nick name & not the real name. I can't think for the life of me where it was but I can picture it as more of an alley or path ( you wouldn't get a car down it these days) it had high stone walls on either side. If I remember anything else I'll be sure to let you know.

Hi Nikki,

You say you say you remember a lane that may have been nick-named Pudding Lane - can you describe where it was - if you can remember.

Sadly I can picture where I'm thinking of but I couldn't be sure of the location. For some reason the area around St Mary's Church in the town rings a bell. Can't help any more than that though....

Thanks for the reply. Pudding  Lane has been non- existant for some and memories for others. I`m sure it excisted. Not sure where. My Great Great uncle thinks it was a small lane/street in the town centre.
