On FindMyPast there are 10 images of Army records for Edward James WALSH born Chatham 1856, he served in the 10th. Foot. He was in Ireland at the time of the 1871 census, hence his absence in 1871.

An added extra, Edward names his mother Mary as next of kin.

The records also give  the date of his marriage to Mary Elizabeth CAMMACK as 28 February 1889, the year was obviously an error, Mary was taken on strength in December 1890.

Hi Shirley,

He was discharged form the Army on the 6 July 1891. He appears to have suffered a lot from ill health during his service with, amongst other things, Bronchitis, Tuberculosis, Anaemia and Ague with around fifteen admitions to hospital, but he still managed to serve his time of 21 years, and get his Long Service and Good Conduct medal.

He also received the India Frontier Medal with clasp for Perak. As well as sering in India he was in Gibraltar, Malta and the East Indies
