MOYES/LIDGATE
« on: Saturday 16 April 05 13:12 BST (UK) »
Margaret Lidgate (b.1837 in 'Scotland' according to info given on 1881 census).
She married John MOYES of Collessie in Liverpool in 1859 and gave her fathers name as John LIDGATE.

I have been unable to trace her birth record or any other references to John Lidgate, so her mothers name remains a mystery.

Any ideas anybody?

Thanks for reading this,
Gill.

Gill,

Looks as though you have a difficult task!

Have you found Margaret in earlier and later censuses, or only in the 1881?  You might be lucky and find that she gave a more precise birthplace location in one of the other censuses?

As John and Margaret were both Scottish, they may perhaps have followed Scottish naming patterns in the names of their children - do you have a complete list of their children?

Otherwise, it might be a matter of waiting patiently until more of the earlier Scottish censuses (indexed) become available on ScotlandsPeople and hope that you find a Margaret of the appropriate age with father John in the 1841 or 1851.  If the time taken for the 1871 to appear is any indication, this could be a long wait ...  Let's hope not!

Thanks for your response.
Margaret is on the 1891 census, but again states her birthplace as Scotland. I think the English enumerators didnt have to be specific when the place of birth was not an English county.

The only son found has been James born in Liverpool in 1865. Margarets father was John Lidgate and John Moyes father was Alexander.

Quite how they ended up in Liverpool is unknown as John Moyes is described as a gamekeeper....not a lot of call for that near their address which was effectively the Dock Road!

Thanks again
Gill

Gill,

I'm not sure what the position is for name indexes for Lancashire for 1861 and 1871 - but you never know if you might just get lucky with a more precise birthplace in 1861 or 1871 ...  It does sometimes happen!

I take it that James is the James on FamilySearch as son of John MOYES and Margaret, b 14 Jan, bap 12 Feb 1865, St Peter, Liverpool (I guess a look at the film of the parish register would be worth while just in case there is any clue there - witnesses names?).  Is Catherine Susan, same parents' names, bap 21 Aug 1867, St-James-the-Less, Liverpool, not yours?   She is presumably the Catherine Susan MOYES on FreeBMD who d Sep qtr 1867 age 0.  I note that an Alexander and a Margaret MOYES (no ages given) died Mar qtr 1864 in Liverpool.

If John and Margaret were married in 1859, it does seem likely that there would have been children before James in 1865...  There are no MOYES births on FreeBMD in Liverpool during those years; have you tried 1837online??

Where was John in 1881?  I take it that the relevant entry is Margaret MOYES, M, 44, b Scotland, Dressmaker and James, son, 16, b Lancashire, India Rubber Worker.  That lists Margaret as Married (i.e. not Widowed).  If there were older children (born between 1859 and 1865) they could well be working away from home.

Well, if no solutions are forthcoming from the information you already have or can get, let's hope that the 1841 and 1851 Scotland censuses when indexed and released will solve your puzzle.

Good luck,

JAP

Hi again
I have James birth certificate and his parents marriage certificate, but no clues from either as to Margarets birthplace.
I will try the St James the Less register for the baby girl, she may not have survived to the 1881 census, so the only confirmation would be to find a common address or her mothers maiden name. This is new information for me to check, thanks.
Gill.

Not that you asked, but ...the other children listed on the IGI extracted files as siblings for John
(parents: Alexander Moyse & Euphemia Maxwell)
Andrew, Alexander, Catherine, & James ...so the Catherine would fit...
(I also saw an Andrew when searching Moyse on the 1881, although it wasn't near Liverpool....)
