TAYLOR Birth and Marriage
« on: Saturday 16 April 05 13:03 BST (UK) »
I have been searching in vain for the marriage of DANIEL TAYLOR (b.1840, Green of Murirton, Inverness) and MARY (surname unknown, although 1881 census says born in Aberdeen).

Their daughter Ellen Jane was born in Aberdeen in 1866 (calculated from later censuses) but I have been unable to find any birth record for her either.

Any ideas?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Gill.

Gill,
don't know if this will help, but there is an Ancestral File on this family on the  LDS site.  Everything seems to have been submitted, but there is a contact name and address.  Whether this will still be valid or not, don't know, but you could try and contact the person.

Hi Gill, back again with an "idea" !!!!!  I had some credits left on ScotlandsPeople this afternoon and did a check for you.

There was no marriage for a Daniel Taylor and a Mary anywhere in Scotland, as far as I could find.   This is where my imagination kicks in!!!

Daniel Taylor on the 1881 Liverpool census gave his birth place as Inverness, age 41.  I found a birth for Daniel Taylor in Inverness, in 1840 to Donald Taylor and Jane Austin.  There was a marriage in Aberdeen between Donald Taylor and Mary Ann Scott, 1865 - this is briefly what is says.

15th April 1865
at 93 Queen Street, Aberdeen
Donald Taylor, Shore Labourer, Age 24 Son of:
Donald Taylor, Blacksmith, and Jane Ogston
Mary Ann Scott, Worker at Ragworks, Age 23, daughter of:
John Scott and Janet Fraser
Both 35 West North Street, Aberdeen

Checking the family search, there are two biriths to this couple,
Janet Taylor, 1867, St. Nicholas, Aberdeen
Sarah Taylor, 1869, Clyde, Glasgow

On to Ellen Jane.  In the family search, there are births for Mary Ann Scott, to Mary Scott 1862 and Helen Jane Scott 1864, to Mary Scott, St. Nicholas Aberdeen.    Could it have been that both Mary Ann and your Ellen Jane were illegitimate, later using the name of Taylor?

Donald Taylor's mother's name on his OPR birth is Austin, whilst on the marriage certificate, it is Ogston.  Ogston being mistaken for Austin???

Daniel and Donald can be interchangeable, as are Patrick and Peter.

As I say Gill, this is all theory and you would have to check it out someway.  If you would like a copy of the marriage certificate,  let me have your email and I will forward it to you.

Regards,   Dorothy

Hi Dorothy
Thank you for taking the trouble to do all this.
I have Daniels birth certificate which gives his father Donald's occupation as salmon fisher. However, in 24 years I guess he could easily have retrained as a blacksmith!
The Austin/Ogston mothers name could also have been a misinterpretation if accents were very thick, and once it was written in the register (assuming they could read) it would be to late to point out any errors.
Ellen Jane did have an older sister, Mary Ann and younger sisters Janet and Sarah born in the  places you say, so I am inclined to think that your assumption that the two older girls were born with the surname Scott. This would also explain why I have never been able to trace them before.
If you still have access to this marriage certificate, and if it does not incur any expense on your part, I would be grateful for a copy.
