Hi Wolliter,
The Shibden industrial school, and the Lister family are well documented in West Yorkshire Archives Calderdale, Halifax.
The references to the school are many, but the one that seems of most interest is
SH:7/JN/B/46-47
Title  Shibden Industrial School, Southowram
Description  [Also known as School of the Good Shepherd]
Date  1871-1931
Extent  253 items
Subject  SCHOOLS
This is only available as original documents, if you are able to get to Halifax and examine the documents yourself it will be cheaper than having the archivist search them for you.

thank you for your reply
much appreciated
karen
Regards,
Andy

I am wondering about the success that anyone has had in looking for records from this institution. I am researching the name Fitzpatrick and the time around 1891. Thanks for any advice.

Hello Igninio,
I have had access to al the records of the school.
They are held in Leeds Catholic archives.
http://www.dioceseofleeds.org.uk/archives/collections/priests_parishes_schools.php

I have been to the archives to research for someone and it was straight forward.
I made an appointment with Mr Finnigan, and he  had the records I was interested ready to view on my arrival.
I arranged everything by email.
The Archives are located at;
Leeds Diocesan Archives
Hinsley Hall
62 Headingley Lane
Leeds
LS6 2BX

 Andy

Andy, I am wondering exactly what you were able to find. I am in the United States and I am not able to simply go to the archives. The archivest wrote to me and said that he had found John Fitzpatrick in the admissions register. I am wondering what exactly that means? Is there a file? Will he simply be sending me a paper with a name on it? I don't want to pester anyone but I am just wondering. If I must pay someone for research I am willing to do so.

What does the admission register consist of?

One more thing. John's brother Michael went to a reformatory. Can you give me any idea as to why that would happen? I am under the impression that he was probably stealing. Anyway, thank you for your help.

Iginio

The Leeds Mercury of Saturday 26 January 1884 has an article on a government enquiry into this Industrial School. Michael Shearan gave evidence and is referred to as a former inmate. He would have been about 16 by this time. If he had committed some misdemeanor to get into the industrial school there may be an account of it in a newspaper.

Hello Lizzie L and Iginio,
I have some background info on the school but sadly I need to scan them at work as they are A3.
I also have info on what I got the last time I went to the Catholic Archives in Leeds to show what you might get if you ordered the info.
I will dig it out, but may have to re scan it as its not here on my new computer
I will try and attach the article from the Leeds Mercury.
If you PM me your email Ignio I will send them all by email.
Keep getting an error, the file is too large to post on the site.
All for now,
Andy

Thank you Andy. I was able to obtain valuable genealogical information because of your taking the time to tell me about these records. I received the document from the Leeds Diocesan Archives. I feel that the facts contained therein will lead to more information. John Fitzpatrick was sentenced to the Industrial School because of neglect. The document provided a date, a court and a judge. I hope I can find the court records now.
