Submarine E30

Hi just wondered if anyone knows anything about Submarine E30, my great great grandad was killed aboard it, in an engine room explosion he died on the 7 Apr 1916, his name was John Smith and he was a Stoker first class , any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Lisa

hello lisa

if you go into this site www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/d+eclass.htm you,ll find info on e 30 but i don,t think there is a photo of her but there are pics of the same type so at least you,ll be able to get an idea of what she looked like , also if you google british submarine e30 1916 there are numerous sites come up so you may get more info from those as well

Thank you Gortonboy i have the same basic information but a different service number, There is a story that an engine exploded and he was killed and his service mates clubbed together for a plaque to remember him then a few months on the submarine was bombed and everyone died

he was awarded the Star,,Victory medal and British war medal.

HMS E30
22 November 1916

Possibly mined off Orford Ness

E30 left Harwich on November 15th. Sunk in the North Sea, possibly due to a mine off Orford Ness. The minefield was not located until 25th November.
