Ship "Normaball" to Auckland 1850 is the name correct? COMPLETED
« on: Monday 17 January 11 07:15 GMT (UK) »
My 3xG Grandfather Robert Macdonald's obituary 15 Jun 1906 Evening Post has him coming from Scotland to Auckland in 1850 on the Normaball. I've been unable to find any other reference to this Ship.
I'm wondering if this is the correct name.
Any help would be great.
Regards
Tracey

Hi Althea
You could well be right. I've had another look at the article and the date could read 1860 which ties in with his death cert which states he had been in NZ for 46 years.

Hi Tracey

Yes, the vessel was the "NOURMAHAL" - arrived at Auckland 5th December, 1859.    Your Robert MacDONALD is on the passenger list.    :)

[Incidentally, I re-checked the obit reference you gave - and it says 1860 - rather than 1850. ]   ;)

You can view the passenger list on the "Peter & Denise" website.   (See "shipping / passenger lists" in Resources section of this board.)

This has been a very interesting thread about the name of the ship and the gentleman concerned Robert Macdonald. I am working on the history of my husbands family and Robert Macdonald and his wife Bessie Adelaide nee Elliot are relations of his. The question that has me beaten is, Robert Macdonald arrived in New Zealand in Dec 1859 on the Nourmahal and his first child Isabella Denton Macdonald was born in Auckland in 1862 but I can not find a marriage for him either here or in Scotland. Napierite do you have any information about this as he is your 3XG grandfather?

Hopefully,
Catherine.
