Civil War Veteran- Walter Scott Wilson 1839-1912

Hello from Down Under,   

Would any kind person be able to assist in helping us to trace our family tree further?

Walter Scott Wilson b Belfast, Ireland 1839 to parents John Wilson and Mary Hamill.

Appears to have married 1st in America - no issue- presumed this wife died. Death certificate confirms 1st marriage.

Appears to have fought in the American Civi War.

Appears to have returned to Belfast, Ireland-married Jane Cunningham 1869.

Emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand with 2nd wife c1870 and died there 1912.


Walter Scott Wilson appears to have served as a Confederate with Hoods Texas Brigade and been wounded at the Second Manassas/Bull Run. He appears to have had two brothers John Hamill Wilson- 1835-1887 and Hugh Hamill Wilson 1839-1913 who also fought in the war. These two older brothers remained in the USA.

The family have been unaware until recently that Walter Scott Wilson has such an interesting and illustrious past and would dearly love to hear from anyone able to help trace him further.

Hello, In addition to the interesting book cited by Genealiza, if you Google each of the Brothers' names separately in quotation marks, you will also see there are other people searching for this family. Hugh and brother John are found in Grimes County, Texas with their tombstones at   www.findagrave.com

This is an online library by Brigham Young University.  If you scroll down to the advanced search and put in Hugh Hamill Wilson, the above mentioned book will appear at page 2001.  Be patient, it is rather slow loading.

I'm not sure what information you want.  If it is on the brothers, you can search Texas information or census returns at :

The brothers are in the census from 1870 to 1910 (Hugh) and from 1870-1880 (John).  They are in Grimes County, Texas for each census.

Hi Genealiza,

Thank you for all this help. It is coming pretty thick and fast which never ceases to amaze me.

I also tried to contact the rootschatter several weeks ago re this family who posted in 2000-2001? but the email is no longer valid. It was from his email and the recently aquired death certificate of Walter Scott Wilson that I realised with great excitment that this must be the "lost brother Walter".

For the moment it would be great to have some proof from records that WSW fought in the Civil War and perhaps if it isn't being too greedy an official record of  his 1st marriage there.

From what I've seen, the family trees on ancestry are all unsourced.  I only saw 1 that had the parents as John and Mary Hamil Wilson.  There were a bunch of photos relating to your Walter, but they are all private and someone has to request permission to view the photos from the owner.

As for the Civil War record, you might try this link:

There is a Walter Wilson who is part of the 4th Texas Infantry, Company G listed as a private. 

There is a link to Texas marriages on the http://pilot.familysearch.org site.  The US doesn't have one large marriage index.  Most marriage records are kept in the county courthouse in the state the marriage occurred. 

You can also try looking at www.usgenweb.com   click on Texas, then try Grimes County.  They might have something.
