Hi - does anyone know anything about French connections to the Delaneys of Port Laoise?
I know the Huguenots came to Ireland from France via Cork and Waterford and the names were Delaunay, Delauney and De l'Aunaie.
My Grandfather was Patrick Joseph Delaney (died Belfast possibly 1930's?)and his father was John from the Lough Teague(Teagh?) area.
Apparently the Delaunay name became Delaney but I would love to know more. I do know the Huguenots were weavers and came over from Poitou and Charentes and La Rochelle areas ---
Somewhere I saw that some came to Spittalfields in London in the 1650- 1750 era -- help!!
Thanks - I can't get over to Portlaoise as am miles away in the north of Scotland but would be very grateful for information if anyone has some!
Thanks.

I;ve merged these 2 posts of yours (although they are identical) and removed the one you've just posted on Ireland-Resources baord (which is for posting resources not queries) since multiple posts on different boards only cause needless confusion for those trying to help.

I've split off the above post from someone else's thread (and looking for different surname) and then merged it with your existing thread to avoid confusion on the other thread.

The Ormondite Refuges; from  Irelands Huguenots and Their Refuge 1662-1754 by Raymond Haven;

Protestant refugees from Ireland croweded into the town of Chester. Among them were; Thomas Sisson, stationer, and Charles and Gedeon Delaune, Dublin Huguenots who had eight children between them.
====
Instances of marriage unions between Huguenots and Anglophone Protestants similarly provides some indication. During the Ormondite era, seven (possibly nine) examples of exogamous marriage may be discerned; the Delaune, Desminieres, Boyer, La Marchant, Cerines and Harabin families are involved.
=========
Throughtout the reign of James 1, and that of Charles 1 up to the Viceroyalty of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Stafford (1633-41) traces of French Protestant immigration to Ireland are scant. Only five denizations of Frenchmen are recorded between 1601 and 1633;
Jacques Fouchier; 16 June 1615
Simon Everard and Jacques Channeau; 21 November 1623
Henri Delaune; 9 January 1628
Etienne Denis; merchant; 28 April 1628.
=============
These are the only mentions of that name and the surname Delaney is not listed in the book.
