Help ! ! - How do I do this ?
« on: Friday 15 April 05 23:39 BST (UK) »
I would like to obtain a copy of my gr. grandfathers birth certificate so I can confirm his parents.     He was John Lupton b. 1835 in Dunston, Lincoln.    The GRO only goes back to 1837 so I don't know where to look next.    Any suggestions ?

 ??? ???

I'm afraid this is where the hard bit starts!
Births, marriages and deaths prior to 1837 were recorded in the Parish Registers of the local church, following a christening, marriage or funeral - so births as such were not recorded - only christenings.
You will need to work out which parish they lived in then go to the local record office (or county archive) to look at the registers, which are usually on microfilm.
(This presumes they were Church of England, of course, if they were any other religion your search will be a little trickier!)

You could also search online on the IGI site (www.familysearch.org) which will give you a guide, but these records aren't fool-proof.

Happy hunting!
Chris

It depends how certain you are about the age ...

There was a John Lupton in Dunston in 1851 who was aged 9, said to have been born in Fillingham (2104/118).  His parents were not with him.  As he was not with his parents, the birthplace may not be correct.

Thanks for this Geoff.  The problem I am having is that  at the time there were 2 Thomas Luptons both born in 1812 in Dunston.   I think I know which one is my gr.gr. grandfather but as yet I have no proof.    So I need that link from John Lupton b. 1835 to which ?? Thomas ??  ???

Hi Geoff :

It's really considerate of you to help.  :)   The Edmund line is not mine.   I have been in contact with a lady in London who is directly related to this Edmund.  We are both a little confused about the Thomas's b. 1812 in Dunston one of whom ( my line ? )  died in 1854 approx.  I think he is the one baptized in May 1812.

Now I'll have to review the information you sent along.
