Query About Tasmanian Ancestors
« on: Thursday 13 January 11 21:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I have recently found out that my great great great grandparents were married in Tasmania in 1858. The question I have is how I can find out if they were convicts? There were two convicts in Hobart at the same time with the same names, ages, and place origins in England, but I'm not sure how I can go about confirming if my relatives are the same people.

In case anyone has the same ancestors and can fill me in, they are:

Joseph Chamberlain (possibly Chamberlaine), born about 1830 in Warwickshire, England.

Mary Ann McGuinness (possibly McInnes or MacInnes), born about 1835 in Liverpool, England.

Joseph and Mary Ann went to New South Wales sometime after their marriage in 1858 and before their son Joseph was born in December 1862.

Thanks,

Katrina Fraser

2 of my ancestors were convicts in Tasmania and married in 1849. There did not seem to be convict permission to marry or any record of their convict past on any subsequent birth, death or marriage certs. I only went off the names, birth places/dates which proved to be correct.

their death certs may indicate years spent in the colony which will hopefully line up with the convict records.

If you need them, I can't speak too highly of the helpfulness of the folk at the Tasmanian Archives.  Some of my convict relatives records were on-line but some not although they were referenced in the archives.  Took but a few days for the people there to send me copies of the off line records I needed.  Find them through the portal.  Good luck.  MaxD

You can use the above site to try and rule out convicts as well.
