Thanks for all your excellent suggestions.  Will certainly follow them.  To me it makes sense that they got married in Malta looking at the where the regiment was but so far haven't found anything.  I have been browsing through the overseas births and marriages indexes this afternoon and don't seem to be getting anywhere.  I did this a while ago but thought I would have another trawl through in case I had missed anything especially as baby James is new information.  I understand that not all overseas bmd's got registered and it depended on the efficiency of the individuals who were responsible at the time.  Also Adelaide was born in Malta according to the census so again that makes sense that she would have got married here.

Barbara - which newspapers do I need to look at?  I can access The Times and the Guardian/Observer and also Gale Newspaper Vault but never had much success with that one.

He was discharged from the army in 1870 and it is possible (according to family stories) that he was employed by the Malta Police - that's another problem - there don't seem to be any records surviving.  Also he would have been a civilian when he travelled back to Manchester and so far I haven't found the family on any passenger lists.

Thanks for helping me.

I was looking in the Gale archive via Lancashire library online access. The lists I've quoted below were from the Morning Chronicle, a London paper. The format is the headline 'Stations of the British Army' and the list always starts with the sentence "Where two places are mentioned, the last-named is that as which the Depot of the Regiment is stationed"

I've just tried the search again (search term "47th foot" in Morning Chronicle, between 1857-1861 and got 73 hits, but not all of them are the lists. Its all very hit & miss!
The same search in the Times produced 41 hits including
Thursday, Jul 08, 1858; pg. 5; Issue 23040; col C
Military And Naval Intelligence
Category: Official Appointments and Notices
"... the 47th Foot, under the command of Col O'Grady Haly CB, received unexpected orders yesterday afternoon to vacate their quarters at Portsmouth and move to Aldershott [sic] on Saturday...but it is probable that the court-martial now sitting on two officers of the 47th may delay the movement a few days"

Very much looking as if the 47th were in England for at least the 2nd half of 1858  ???

Barbara, I think you can also get to some of the info you were finding with this google search - "47th foot" +1857 brought up this link - Distribution of the British Army 5 September 1857 http://carl.army.mil/nafziger/857IAA.pdf

Changing years, e.g. 1858, brings up Distribution of the British Army, 3 July 1858 http://carl.army.mil/nafziger/858GAA.pdf

Thanks Monica.  That really does back up Barbara's findings that they were in England in 1858.  In fact it looks like the 47th didn't go anywhere for a while after returning from Gibralter in Sep 1857, the page for 1859 still has them in Aldershot.

Wonder if Adelaide went back to/stayed in Malta for birth of her first child?

Certainly possible Barbara especially if her parents were here.  I would have expected him to be registered as an army birth though.  He could have been registered in Malta but its not possible to search indexes here and the Public Registry will only help with an exact date  >:(.  If they married in Malta the marriage could have been registered in Malta and again I've got the same problem.

I did once apply to the Public Registry for one of Henry and Adelaide's grandchildren and gave a name and my best guess for a date and they sent me a certificate for one of their other grandchildren that I didn't know existed because he died young so may be I will give it a go.  They only charge 2.33 euros and refund if they don't issue a certificate so it's not a gamble really.
Just got to work out some best guesses for their marriage and baby James' birth as I think they seach 6 months either side of the date given.

Just checked the website and they only keep records back to 1863, prior to that they are in the Church archives, so you have to apply to the relevant parish.

Another plan foiled.
