Help deciphering place name in Inverness please
« on: Thursday 13 January 11 10:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Really need help deciphering the place name appearing in a marriage OPR Urquhart, Inverness in 1800.  The place name appears after Ann(e) Chisolm's name and I think it begines with an R.

I do hope someone can tell me what it is please.

Thanks in anticipation ...

It looks like Ruibrulk......or Riubranely in the bottom one.  Not that's any help I'm sure!
Johnson, Crankshaw, Burdett, Shaw, Dawson/Dulson, Whitebread/Whitbread, Drane, Hyett, Holtaway, Thompson, Bodell, Livermore, Gee, Vernon, Smith......the list goes on....and on...and on....

Hi

Thanks for trying.

I should perhaps confirm that these are the same places but appearing in different OPRs from SP for the same date.

Thanks in anticipation ...

I would suggest

Ruibrulek in the first example

Ruibhruelig in the 2nd - this could be the Gaelic spelling

In the first example, the name is followed with 'by' which usually means 'near' (unless it's the person who married them  ;) ). Can you show us the next few words?

and

Hi Linda

In the 1st one it is "by Rev Jas Fowler".

Thanks for your help ...

Westwood,   Ruighbruich & Ruibhmelig! or Ruighmelig?  Ruigh=a sheiling.   Try this map/aerial view on the same page,   http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm   the local Heritage Society at Drumnadrochit should know.       Skoosh.

There is a Ruilick near Beauly, wouldn't have thought that was within the boundaries of the parish though.

According to an old county directory there was a John Chisholm there as well.

The directory and a history of Urquhart and Glenmoriston can be found on Archive.org

Many thanks to you all for your suggestions.

Still Looking - this makes sense to me as some of the family at a later date are, I believe in Beauly.  Thank you for the suggested website but can you please specifically confirm what you searched for so I can see the results too?

Thanks in anticipation ...
