I am prohibited from sending an Excel Spreadsheet with 2 Worksheets on Ballantines.
On the Robert Niven Worksheet you would find Janet Niven marrying Thomas Ballantine and later their granddaughter Agnes Ballantine marrying Alexander Niven.
On the Niven/Ballantine sheet you would see a Billy Niven (adopted), whose grandson (I think) John Ballantine Niven was killed in 9/11.

I have been researching my family-history for over 30 years and the one line on which I have never made any progress is Ballantyne.
I know that my 4 x great-grandparents Thomas Welsh and Jean Ballantyne were married in Glasgow in 1795. Thomas was a soldier in the 7th Regiment of Fencibles, the "Hopetoun Fencibles", and I believe he was from Roxburghshire.
Jean is described in the marriages register as "Residenter in Glasgow", which just means that she lived there, but of course she may well have been a native. The only possible birth I've found at the right time in Glasgow (I can't remember the date offhand) is a Jane or Jean born to James Ballantine and Christian McGregor. I have never been able to find this couple's marriage.

William Seton Gordon Duys Niven was adopted by his aunt after his mother, Adele Gordon Duys died. The aunt was Susan Gordon who had married John Niven.
William Niven had three children. The youngest, John Ballantine Niven, was my husband. He was killed at age 44 on September 11th. His son is named John Ballantine Niven. I found this site because my son and I were looking for more background on his name, so I would be interested to know more about Ballantine and Niven. I have a detailed family tree on Gordon.

In reply to E Niven
Great to correspond with you. I have extensive details of Nivens and Ballantines on the Niven of Maybole Family Tree on Ancestry.com. Your direct ancestor, Alexander Niven b1760 Bishop Of Dunkeld, was a school friend of Robert Burns as was Alexander's full cousin, William Niven b1762. I clearly have errors on the Family Tree regarding your family. Please clarify the following? Was your husband's parents William Niven and ?. Was your husband's grandparents William Seton Gordon Duys Niven and Jeanne? What were the names of your husband's siblings? William, Susan & Wendy?
Regards
Gordon Niven
