Kennedy and McMilllian Old Cumnock
« on: Monday 10 January 11 17:50 GMT (UK) »
Just found a bit more on my ggg grandfather. Wondering if i could get any ideas about Old and New Cumnock and if there were any other Kennedys out there.

William Kennedy was born in 1841 in Kilmarnock to William Kennedy and Mary/Margaret McMillan. He married Ann Andrews in 1865 in Glasgow. The immigrated to the US abt 1870 where he worked as a block cutter.

His parents look to have been born in 1806 in Old Cumnock.
Siblings were
1. . James KENNEDY (1835-          )
 2. John KENNEDY (1843-          )
 3 Robert KENNEDY (1832-          )
 4. Jane KENNEDY (1829-          )
 5 Margaret KENNEDY (1845-          )

Thanks- Kristin

Hi, I see this is an older post but below is a link to a New Cumnock website which was started up by a Stephen Kennedy!  Some one else is running it now, but there is a guest book on there where you might like to put a message.

There is capacity for private email messages thru the guest book as well, it's pretty quiet these days, but if you put a message in to the guest book, the current Manager is sure to give you a reply.  He 's a born and bred New Cumnock man, and very knowledgeable about NC Families.  He's a relative of mine actually, as I think  almost everyone in New Cumnock is, nothing like 2 sets of great grandparents with large families in a small village for giving me connections to many, many families in NC!  I think I have more relatives there than I have here in NZ!

Hope this is helpful for you!
Jeanne😄

Thank you for the reply. I haven't been doing much digging lately and just got back into my UK lines. I will look into the site.

Thank you for the search! That is the family. McMillian and Kennedy family are ellusive. Might have them Kennedy family in the census but would feel better if i could find the next generation of bmd's.

Thank you again!

Hi, I went back and was looking further into the Kennedy/McMillan line. I have a question for you. Where did you get Margaret's surname as being McMillan? I have been looking at various certs and that is not the surname that I am coming up with. Kim

I have the marriage record of a William Kennedy and Annie Andrews. William's mother is Mary McMillan. This is Glasgow 1863. I got it from Scotland's People website. I have William's death record in NY but it doesn't list parents names. I have not found William's birth record yet. Based on naming patterns and NY census information I found the William and Annie Andrews Kennedy kids names .  I used William and Annie's children's birth patterns as the model to estimate parental names based on Scottish naming patterns. I know more on Annie from a family bible and the kids had maiden names as middle names so I was able to eliminate some census records as the similarities were uncanny.

Does this make any sense?

Hi Kristin, It does. I ask as I was following a William Kennedy and wife Margaret in the '41, '51, '61', '71, '81, who seem to be the parents of the children you listed as belonging to William & Margaret. The family starts out in Ayr ad then moves to Glasgow but all are still listed always as being born in Ayr. I then found the death certs of both parents and on each the informant is either the husband William ( on Margaret's) or son James (on William's). The only problem is that the mom's maiden name does not come up as McMillan. Yet they appear to be your family. Could your William have been married twice? Do you have any other info on the family- even a snippet you do not think is important may help. Kim

Hi again Kristin, one other question. Do you know when William and Margaret married? I ask only because I have also found a marriage for the William & Margaret who correspond to the censuses and death certs, Kim
