By David Hay imo w Ann Greig 25.9.1793 59, 2w Margt Davidson 23.3.1823 54, (her two eldest ss John & Davdison both d childhood, also his two youngest Isobell & Alexander both d inf.

David Hay would have died the following year if that mortcloth entry was for him, but there's no mention of him on the stone.

I just want to double check...Here's how I read this:

By David Hay in memory of wife Ann Grieg 25 Sep 1793 59 yrs old
second wife Margaret Davidson 23 Mar 1823 54 yrs old...

If I have this right, the same David Hay married both Ann Grieg and Margaret Davidson, according to this???

If so, then I have a problem because I show them as two generations of David Hays - father and son.

David Hay married 1763 Anne Grieg . I have one son, David b abt 1764, m 1794 Margaret Davidson, their sons, Davidson and John were ch 1795.

Yikes!

Well according to the stone David married both Ann Grieg and Margaret Davidson.

And just to confuse the matter even further, there's another David Hay stone, a fancy flat stone;
13. Janet Raitt 21.3.1758 57, h David Hay mason in Tulloh of Berv(ie) d 17.10.176(3) 60, das Janet Hay (9).6.1738 (2) y, Mary Hay 22.2.1758 14, also Kath Hay 179(8) 61.  The sunglasses smiley should be an 8 but keeps coming up as a smiley instead!

Well! I'm really happy I stopped in here, in a bittersweet way - LOL...looks like I have some tree pruning to do.
I think I originally got this line from a now 83 yr old cousin...that would be about 15 years ago. And, considering the dates, I can see why I've never questioned it.This is the second time I've trusted the elders and it went sideways. I found it hard to find records for that period and just left it.
As for David Hay and Janet Raitt - I have them down as "suspects" possible parents of David Hay m Anne Grieg.

So, Mr David was real busy making kids when he was past 60. Wow.

I'm going to have to backtrack for a bit and see what's up here. If you come across any other tidbits - do show and tell!
More later, and thank you doesn't come close...
Pat

Katherine Hay must have d 1793 - 1798 doesn't work with her ch date of 1732.
I have, in case anyone else is interested, Alex 1730, Katherine 1732, Robert 1734, David 1734, Janet 1736, John 1741, and Mary 1743 as probable children of David Hay and Janet Raitt.

Hi Jean,
could you check the M.Is. for a Robert Young who died 1851/1854 husband of Susan Smith. His wife & children are living Middle St Johnshaven in 1861. I have been unable to find a death cert for him 1855-1861.
I think he is on 1841 census for Johnshaven with father Archibald, sister Charlotte & grandmother Mary Waldie but looking for confirmation it is same person.
Many thanks
Kris.

Hello Jean,

I have an interest in Benholm as my gr-gr-grandmother Margaret JAFFRAY was born and lived in Benholm. I have no record of her death or the deaths of her parents or siblings. Do you have any JAFFRAYs buried in the Benholm Kirkyard? If there are I can provide further details on names and birth dates. Thank you for your efforts on this project.
