Hello Jean,
Thank you for your prompt reply to my query.
My 5 x great grandfather George Milne was born 1701 and was a servant at the Mill of Garvock until he took over the tenancy, which the family held until 1839 when his grandson John Milne died.
George died 6 Nov 1771 & was buried at Benholm, along with his third wife, Ann who died in Dec 1777 and one of his sons, Alexander who died in 1780.
George married 1. Isabel Young 25 Jul 1726 at Garvock- 10 children
married 2. Ann Ballow 29 Dec 1744 Garvock, one dtr Jean and 3. Ann Milne 9 Mar 1759 at Benholm- no issue.
I have the names of the 10 children, some of whom would also have been buried at Benholm, if you need them.
Regards
David Milne

Hello David,

I've had a look at the pre 1855 gravestone index , but as I don't know their names I can't tell!! The inscription for George and his wife Ann, says that "Their ashes with those of a number of his relatives ly deposited here", so perhaps that encompasses some of his first wifes children.

I don't know why they would have been married in Benholm, did Ann come from Benhom? I've an incline that maybe his 1st wifes children stayed in Garvock and may have been buried there?

To be sure let me have their names and marriages/children etc.

Thanks Jean

Hello Jean,

Thanks so much for helping.
George's children by his first wife Isabel Young are as follows
James bapt 1732
David     "    1734
George  "     1741
William   "     1742
There were 4 other children- another George  1729 & a William 1739, who must have died young and then Alexander 1744 who was buried with his father 1780 at Benholm & John born 1743 who died at Johnshaven in 1818. He took of the lease of the Mill of Garvock as did his son Jon.

George's first wife Isabel died about 1744 when George remarried Ann Ballow.

My wife and I visited Benholm Church in September last year- a delightful church- but found most of the headstones so hard to read.

Kind regards

David

David, there are no gravestones for the ones you mention, but there are 2 more Milne gravestones beside George Milne, so I think there is probably a family connection.

These are the transcriptions from the pre 1855 gravestone index.

1820. GM. AG. by Geo Milne at Mill of Kair imo w Ann Garvie 26.3.1820 40. Geo Milne fr Mill of Kair 19.7.1845 72, yt s Thos. d Crieff 10.10.1846 28 int there, yt da Ann d Montrose 27.11.1902 87.

by Jas Falconer, Hair-Muir of Benholm d 13.8.1883 imo da Annabella 14.1.1857 16, w Jean Milne 28.5.1871 63. ********

*****This stone is beside George Milne and the other is beside Jean Milne.

Hello Jean,
You are a sweetie.
You are right about the family connection, and I know who the other Milnes are who you refer to.
You live in a lovely part of Scotland and I have a great empathy with my forebears from Kincardineshire.
My ggg grandfather, David Milne with his brother George, went from Johnshaven to London in 1783, as merchants and both became Lloyd's underwriters.
One of David's sons emigrated to Australia in 1818 for the free land then on offer and here we are after nearly 200 years.
Thank you once again.
Regards David
ps. Joann & Douglas Beattie of Johnshaven are related to me

No problem David !

I suppose your weather's a bit better than ours just now, although it is quite warm to day, it rained almost all last week. But the scenery makes up for it!

Jean :)

Sorry Beckey, none of your names appear in the pre 1855 gravestone index or on the Kirk plan.

There is a w Stephen on the plan but I have not transcribed it, I'll take a  look and see if the stone is still there.
