Thank you, Jean.  And I think you are likely correct that the later people are more likely to be in the newer cemetery if they remained in the area.

Those Fullertons and related names associated with the family of George Fullerton and Margaret Pirie who resided at Mains of Dun about 1740 and Knox of Benholm after 1760, and their descendents scattered from Lunan to Peterhead, across Canada and the United States, and assuredly elsewhere.

I am transcribing the headstones in Benholm Kirkyard and this project is almost complete.

If your ancestors died in Benholm/Johnshaven prior to 1892 then they will most likely be buried in Benholm Kirkyard. Providing they have a headstone then I may have information that could be useful.

I also have various records appertaining to Benholm and various snippets of information that I have picked up along the way.

So please contact me and I'll try my best!!

Jean

Jean, as an afterthought do you know of a Stone of Benholm Bothy?

Stone of Benholm is a farm just over the way from us. It stands back from the road and I have never been up to it. It is surrounded by trees so the buildings aren't visible, the Bothy could be part of the farm steading or it could have been part of Stone of Benholm cottage which stands by the side of the road at the bottom of the lane to the main farm buildings.

Bothies were one room living places, so over time as the buildings have been modernised, the bothies have been incorporated into larger cottages and sadly have been lost. On the farm where we live the Bothy has completely disappeared, but it is thought to have been within the farm steading, which is now cow sheds. There are some clues to it's existance though, as there is a chimney and strange blocked up doors and windows.

Dear Jean,

I hope that you may be able to help me find a few headstones in Benholm.  I am looking for Alexander Gardner married Elizabeth Lermond, and had two sons Alexander born 1829, and George Folerton Carnegie Gardner born 1830. Both sons came to Australia, Alexander in 1852, and George in 1855.

They are both listed as farmers from Benholm on shipping records. Their father was alive in November 1852, but dead by January 1855. Both parents lived in Montrose in 1852. Elizabeth was still living their, widowed, in 1855. This comes from shipping records of the two brothers.

An uncle is visiting the area next month from Australia, and we are hoping to find him a few headstones to visit in the area!

Any idea if there are any other Carnegie-Gardner's (possible hypenated surname) in the area.

Thanks very much, Jenny.

Sorry no-one with any of those surnames in Benhom Kirkyard. I have got an entry from the Farm Horse Tax records;

July 22 1797 - George Carnegie at Narrows of Balandria - 2 Horses liable to duty @ 2 shillings each - Duty payable 4 shillings.

There are fullertons in Benholm, please see the other thread for Benholm Kirkyard and I have photos of Fullerton stones if you should need them.
