Hello,
I am just wondering if anyone knows where the following people would be buried?

Robert McLellan died 27th January 1920 last known address Peets Land, Main St, Davidson's Main.

Elizabeth McLellan nee Boyes died 8th December 1941 last known address 67 Church St, Stenhousemuir, Stirlingshire.

Helen Black nee Black died 18th March 1935 last known address 45 Frederick St, Edinburgh.

Mary Ritchie nee Hill died 13th September 1852 last known address 68 Causewayside, St Cuthbert's.

Jane Ritchie died 1st May 1891 last known address 45 Mayfield Rd, Edinburgh.

Margaret Ritchie died 29th March 1917 last known address 45 Mayfield Rd, Edinburgh.

Wilhelmina Ritchie died 31st March 1899 last known address 45 Mayfield Rd, Edinburgh.

As I am Melbourne Australia I have no idea what cemetaries are near these addresses.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards
Christime

Hi Christine

Edinburgh City Council is responsible for most Edinburgh cemeteries and crematoria and they hold the records.  The cemeteries in their care are listed on this page.

http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/directory/40/cemeteries_and_crematoria

Their contact details are on this page

http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/655/death-graves_and_memorials/664/cemeteries_and_churchyards/1

The nearest municipal cemetery to Mayfield Road is Newington.
Causewayside - could be Preston Street or Newington.
Frederick Street - that's right in the middle of town and I wouldn't want to hazard a guess.
Davidson's Mains - possibly Warriston, where there is also a crematorium.

Hope that helps.

Nell

Thank you Little Nell and Ume for your help.

I already have the wills etc from Scotlands People and have made initial contact with Morton Hall who have supplied me with a quote which I will pay in the next week or so.

You have both been very helpful.

Kind regards
Christine

Hi Chris,

I have just seen your post and I think we are researching the same Ritchie family.  My husband is descended from David Ritchie and Mary Hill, through their son William.  I also think we met at the 1995 Ritchie reunion in Melbourne.

I have been doing a little research on the Ritchies and would love to share what I have with you.

Kind Regards,

Julie

Hi Julie,

Nice to hear from you.  I honestly can't remember back that far as to whom I met and whom I didn't.  My email address is (*) and I would love to hear from you.  Cousin Vida did a wonderful job getting us all together.  I have so much information but would love to share.  I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Christine

Hi again Julie,

Don't spend any more on the Ritchies.  I have spent a small fortune on them over the past twenty years and am willing to share.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Christine

The nearest cemetery to Mayfield Road is Newington.
Davidson's Mains is possibly in the parish of Cramond, and Cramond kirkyard is the nearest.
The closest to Frederick Street is either St Cuthbert's kirkyard or possibly Dean Cemetery.
The nearest to Causewayside is probably Greyfriars kirkyard.

Stenhousemuir is in the parish of Larbert, about 30 miles west of Edinburgh.

Just because these are the nearest burial grounds doesn't mean they were buried there. It would depend partly on the date of death. All of these are well after the date of inauguration of the Edinburgh Cemetery Company, which founded several city cemeteries including Newington.

The folk at Mortonhall will keep you right.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
