I have ancestors in Montrose, Bervie, and all round the North East of Scotland....including Buchans from Aberdeen.   I live in east lothian, not too far from Dunbar...

My husbands family are from Ireland and came over during the potato famine.

I understand what you are saying about the olderones not speaking about their past and always envy people who have ha most of the history passed on to them.  I remember my great Granny (in the picture) having a very sparse, but comfy house and I know she had had a hard life, working on the farms with my gt grandad.  But her sons and daughter looked after her well in her later years.

Hi,
Just to say that I too have done some research on Irish roots....I have a McGoohan, recorded as McGowan probably due to the liteacy problem and the preist interpreted it as McGowan...caused a lot of problems...I also have Conways from Ireland and have had no luck tracing them......

hi,
i am working in edinburgh today.
I think that if you are in East Lothian that ur Conway/Mc5oochans are probably related to mine....I also pin pointed them in Ballinamore.....I am using my mobile to reply but will get back to you to explain in detail....I have Patrick McGoochan married to Sarah Conway in 1858...off the top o my head...at Edinburgh.....both born 1836 approxiamately....there are many children from this family and I found his brothers, sister and mother in West lothian....Lynda
