Being the grandson of a Halifaxonian (?), Halifaxian (?), or Halifaxer (?) or whatever is correct, as well as a Rootschat research collaborator of Maggie10 and CharlotteCH, I too applaud you Malcolm for reinstating the Calderdale site.
My grandfather, who removed with his family to the U.S. as a boy in 1905, made a mammoth blunder in early summer 1915, when he visited his relatives in Halifax. He was 23 years old and still a British subject and hadn't factored the outbreak of the Great War into the planning for his visit. He was threatened with conscription into the service of Britain upon his arrival in the U.K. But somehow he returned to the U.S. a few weeks later, a direct consequence of which has been the opportunity provided to me to post this message.
Regards,
John
