Help with a birth or baptism please....
« on: Thursday 06 January 11 15:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  I have been looking for a birth for my Gt. Gt. Granddad Thomas Whitney's first born child - Jane, who is down on the census in 1851 as being 8 years old.  I have assumed that she would have been born 1843 roughly, and have searched freebmd for her birth, but cannot find it.  Her father and his wife Mary Ann lived in Llanblethian, nr. Cowbridge all their married life and they had 12 children altogether.  I thought that freebmd was quite accurate regarding births, marriages and deaths and this is the first time I have not been able to find a birth on it.

Do you think that she might have not been registered, or that it has been missed off the transcriptions for some reason.

Is there anywhere else I can check for her birth?  Does anyone know if there are parish registers online anywhere for births in Llanblethian?

Hi Di

The 1851 Census has Jane at Penylan Hamlet with dad Thomas, mum Mary and siblings David, Mary & Hannah.

You can find Janes birth on www.familysearch.org in Llansannor (nr Cowbridge) but that's as much as it shows, and it's from the IGI so would need to be confirmed. By the way, if you search for Thomas' marriage in 1840 +/-5yrs, you'll find it with parents names - the surname is spelt Witney but that's the way it's spelt on the marriage record on FreeBMD;-)

There's no relevant record in the British Vital Records Index either, but then its coverage of S Wales is sparse.

FreeBMD has a Jane Whitney born in Carmarthen registration district in Q2 1841, but the birthplace conflicts! I know quite a stretch, but FreeBMD has 2x Jane Watkin births in Bridgend district in Q3 1843...

Check out http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~walesle/wal/ond.htm for a Whitney mailing list - the admin is searching Welsh Whitneys too.

Sorry can't be more help

Cheers
Clive

<EDIT> Just had a thought. It could be that, as you mentioned, the particular parish record hasn't been transcribed onto FreeBMD yet. There are loads of birth records for the Bridgend district in 1843, but it could still be missing the one you're looking for  :-[

Swift (Merseyside & Wigan), Earle (Merseyside), Valentine (Merseyside, London & Germany)

Only a genealogist would consider a step backwards as progress...

parish records won't show on FreeBmd, only civil registrations.

Have you asked the local registrars to check for the birth registration? Email
registraratbridgend.gov.uk replacing at with @

It's possible that her birth wasn't registered. At this time, the onus was on the registrar to record the births, not the parents to register. Fees for non-registration didn't come in until the mid 1870s.

If you want the birth cert to confirm mother's maiden name, you could get one for one of the other children.
David Whitney march qtr 1845 Bridgend vol 26 pg 366
Mary Whitney march qtr 1847 Bridgend vol 26 pg 364
Hannah Whitney march qtr 1849 Bridgend vol 26 pg 259

It looks likely that the marriage reg is
Thomas Witney & Mary Anne Collier june qtr 1842 Bridgend vol 26 pg 541
1851 sees them living next to some Colliers.

Hi,  thank you both for your information.  I have found Jane on family search and as you said, it says she was born in Llansannor.  They could have possibly lived with Mary Ann's parents before they moved to Llanblethian and that would explain the birth of Jane being there.  Well, Thomas Witney and Mary Ann Collier were married in Llansannor also.  I have the parish record for the marriage of Thomas and Mary Ann and on it, it says her father was Robert Collier, who was a labourer.  I have the 1851 census for Thomas and Mary and had a look at the family who lived next door, but the Head was Abraham - no Robert.
I will check out the Rootsweb site and also the Bridgend Registrar.  Thank you both for your help.
Regards, Di

Abraham looks to be Mary Ann's brother.

IGI extracted baptisms in IGI batch C024761 for Llansannor
Abraham bp 25/6/1815 son of Robert Collier & Sarah
Mary Anne bp  30/10/1825 dau of Robert & Sarah

Thanks Osprey and Clive for the information.  I have not used this IGI website much as when I have, I can't seem to find much on it that I am looking for, but I will persevere with it.  Also, it doesn't always seem very accurate.  I have just looked on the parish register for the marriage of Thomas & Mary Ann and one of the witnessess names -I couldn't read, but on looking at it again, I think it says Abraham! So her brother was a witness!

Thank you both for your time and trouble,

Regards Diana.

you can access the extracted records of the IGI using this link

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm

it should cut out the wished for & invented details sometimes submitted.
