12th Regiment of Foot Liverpool Lancashire
« on: Thursday 06 January 11 08:23 GMT (UK) »
I have come across a death notice for my 4 x great grandfather in South Australia and it states that Matthew Ormsby (1) was a soldier in the 12th Regiment of Foot. Matthew was born in Sligo Ireland and I believe they may have been stationed in Lancashire as I have found a Matthew Ormsby (who may be the father of Matthew Ormsby (1)) in the 1861 English census in Liverpool Lancashire and he was a retired military officer and from Sligo Ireland. Also in the South Australian death notice for Matthew (1) was a statement of "Liverpool Mercury please copy". My 4 x great grandfather was in South Australia in 1853 as he had a son born in that year in Adelaide. I have googled 12th regiment of foot and it points to them being in Victoria for the Eureka Stockade. Would anybody have any idea where I could get more information on the 12th regiment please???? and I am seeking information about the Ormsby family in Toxheth Park in Liverpool please????
Thanks Deb Robinson

Hi Deb

There is a death recorded on FreeBMD for a Matthew Phibbs Ormsby in March (qtr) of 1865. It was in West Derby which was basically modern day Liverpool, apart from the city centre. This may give details of what type of officer he was, as he is not coming up in the London Gazette website. Nor can I find him in a few Army Lists of the period. So he may have sold his half-pay commission, or was an officer of the Volunteers.

I would also suggest you post a question on MERSEYSIDE GENEALOGY & HISTORY FORUM as I believe a few members have access to the Liverpool Mercury archives.

Have now found this – http://www.royalblood.co.uk/D804/I804358.html  - which suggests they were not related

PS...when did the soldier die and how old was he? Also, where did you get the information that the 12th were in Australia in 1853? My records have one battalion in the Cape, and the other leaving Cork for NSW in July 1854.

Ken

The 12th Regiment of Foot became the Suffolk Regiment in 1881, and are now part of The Royal Anglian Regiment.
There is a Suffok Regiment website, and you may be able to use it for more information about their service in Australia and Lancashire:
http://www.suffolkregiment.org/Menu.html

It seems clear that the regiment was at the Eureka Stockade.
