deed poll

Not sure were i should post this question but it is todo with deed poll,i know the name changed from birth to marrage,the birth was 1927 and the marrage 1947. Would proof of person be needed in 1947 for marrage? i contacted registera and the said its data protected information deed poll but on looking at another site,National Archives
 say it can be searched for by present or former name, any help gratefully received

Not everyone who changed their name did so by deed poll. It wasn't necessary. It still isn't (you can call yourself whatever you like, as long as you don't do it for fraudulent purposes). Similarly the details given at marriage were probably not checked in any way (banns etc kind of served this purpose).
